Caribbean Diaspora Oral History Collection Interview with Carl Juste Miami, FL, February 9, 2016 Interview asm0344000019 Interviewed by Béatrice Colastin Skokan Recorded by Javier Carrion Outline by Reymond Sanchez Length 01:15:06 Interview with Carl Juste, a Haitian-Cuban-American photojournalist who grew up in New York and moved to Miami with his family as a child. He is the son of Haitian-American community leader Viter Juste and is a graduate of the University of Miami’s School of Communication. He has traveled all over the world during his journalistic career. He settled in Miami and is a Pulitzer Prize winner working for the Miami Herald. In this interview, Carl discusses his upbringing with his very influential father, the burgeoning of the Little Haiti community, and his experience with other immigrants and racism. He also talks about his blended cultural identity with parents of Haitian and Cuban ancestry, his work for the Miami Herald, and the places he has travelled. Finally, he discusses his book project, Havana Haiti: Two cultures, One Community, and the creation of the Iris PhotoCollective with other journalists who share a concern over media depictions of communities of color. Where you’re from, your childhood, and stuff like that - 00:07:43: So all this happened with your dad before the civil rights movement? - 00:12:10: You came from New York to Miami in a 7 car caravan? - 00:19:54: So how was living in Miami with all the politics and immigrants going on around here? - 00:21:30: So both your parents spoke Spanish fluently? - 00:30:50: The wave of Haitian migration at that time was coming chiefly from the North right? - 00:34:23: So tell us what HACAD was? - 00:38:43: So when you go to these big cultural events, it is nothing new to you because of your dad? - 00:45:55: Is your book that is coming out, about Cuba and Haiti, a meditation on the process that you have been going through?
