Pan American World Airways, Inc. Telephone: (212) 632-5080 Purchasing Department Pantel: 8-254-5080 P. O. Box 989, JFK Airport Station Telex: NYCPIPA Jamaicar New York 11430 Editor Volume X, No. 1 Bernard T. Connolly Fall - 1984 DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER! AWARE is a unique and independent volunteer association of Pan Am employees worldwide who contribute their time and talent to promote Pan Am and the communities we serve. 1984 is the "diamond" anniversary of AWARE - a celebration of ten years of commitment to the principle of partnership among all levels of Pan Am employees. AWARE is dedicated to a vigorous and successful Pan Am, America's airline to the world. The diamond is one of the world's most important mineral resources: pure, natural, and brilliantly reflective. AWARE, similarly is purely philanthropic: dedicated to promoting world commerce and tourism in general and, of course, Pan Am specifically. It is only natural that thousands of gifted people worldwide, proud of their association with Pan Am, look for additional way to use their energy and creativity. This is simply a reflection of their feeling of responsibility in continuing and fostering Pan Am's tradition of excellence. AWARE started in 197 4 as the spontaneous reaction of Pan Am employees, who all joined forces to deal with crucial financial conditions brought about by the 1973 oil crisis, which seriously impacted Pan Am, as America's foremost international carrier. Economic conditions of the early 80s were equally serious when many CMS03H /Vctl, Box ¿If, RAckrVj airlines of the world began facing their most challenging period. Pan Am has survived, while others have not. Of course, we cannot be complacent. The achievement of excellence requires constant vigilance . Since that modest beginning, AWARE has expanded and flourished, with groups of activists in Pan Am cities throughout the world demonstrating loyalty to Pan Am and commitment to their local communities. AWARE, like a diamond, is unique. It is an innovative concept in industry. It has bridged traditional communication barriers that seem to separate contract and management employees in many large companies. It is a partnership of mutual commitment, involvement and awareness. Diamonds can be decorative or "industrial". We are not interested in simply being ornamental. We are industrious by nature. Pan Am AWARE employees are professional, willing to work without pay and to travel at their own expense to promote Pan Am. They care deeply about Pan Am and its success. AWARE projects are limited only by the imagination and skills of Pan Am employees. We haven't found a limit to our projects yet. Whether "diamonds in the rough" or highly polished, there are AWARE members wherever there is Pan Am. We keep on shiningl
