It is Inter*Continental’s 40th hotel in 29 lands around the world, and completes a project begun eleven years ago. In his speech at the official luncheon on opening day, The Prime Minister, The Right Honorable Keith Holy-oake, C. H. made the following remarks: “This is a great and very distinguished occasion . . . Mrs. Holyoake and I feel privileged and delighted to be invited and to play some part in it. The Hotel Inter*Continental Auckland is fully up to first-class international standards. I say this without fear of contradiction. It’s functional, it’s comfortable, it has style, it has character. And although, of course, much international knowledge and experience has gone into the arrangements, the organization, and the building, the hotel is unmistakably New Zealand in its atmosphere, in its decor. ... I warmly congratulate everyone concerned: the owners, the designers, the builders, the engineers—everyone associated for the ingenuity, for the imagination, for the foresight, for the organizing ability, all of which have combined to create such a fine and distinguished building and service. The conception, the financing, the design, and the construction of this hotel to me are an outstanding act of The Hotel lnter*Continental Auckland.
