June, 1957 THE FIRST flight in PAA's new New York/Barbados service is welcomed by the Barbados Police Band resplendent in British constabulary uniforms. LAD is emphasizing a Caribbean “lower islands" tour with Barbados as star attraction. For a story on local hotels and attractions on Barbados and nearby islands, see below. BGI For Bridgetown; PAA Opens Barbados Service BARBADOS & "LOWER ISLANDS" NEW ATTRACTION Add BGI to the list of codes to remember. It stands for Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, which became a regular stop on LAD routes as of May 13. And Barbados is now part of a new Caribbean circle trip which includes American St. Croix, French Martinique, British Barbados and Trinidad, Dutch Curacao and Spanish Dominican Republic. Bridgetown, Barbados — The British took over from the fierce Arawak Indians here in 1627, then built 26 forts along 21 miles of exposed, sheltered coast in the what-we-have, we-hold tradition. But the invading tourist will encounter no resistance. He will find the best water supply in the Caribbean, deluxe accommodations, cooling Trade Winds, a golf course, tennis clubs, night clubs, sailing, fishing and for the swimmer and snorkeler, some of the clearest water this side of Nassau. Bargains He will also find bargain shopping. Gin goes for about $2 a bottle, Scotch for $3, rum for $1.25. A custom-tailored fine linen suit will cost his wife only $27; for himself, a custom-tailored top grade gabardine suit is $80. English woolens and tropicals: about $4.50 a yard. In Rio and Sao Paulo upwards of 40,000 people jammed stadiums to see demonstrations of wheelchair basketball. At arrival and before games and in between there were press and TV interviews, receptions, and, always, crowds. At the center of all the commotion? The Pan Am Jets, PAA’s paraplegic basketball team, winners of the Paralympics in London two years running, in between times hard at work in GAO. The trip to Brazil was officially called “Paraplegic Mission.” Behind it were Brazilian President and Mrs. Kubits-chek, who issued the invitation and gave a reception; A. H. da Silva Machado, president of PAB; and LAD executives. For the games themselves, the 18-man squad, managed by Thomas D. Ford, Asst. Chief Accountant at GAO and coached by Junius Kellogg, former center for the Harlem Globetrotters who is now a paraplegic as the result of an auto accident, split into two teams: the Pan Am Jets and the Jatos de Panair. In two contests, the teams split the Cnso3 /iVrr ' 2' "Clipper’ Trade-Mark, Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. Hunting & Fishing Guide ALASKA SALES GET BOOST WITH "ALASKA WEEK" Alaska is moving to center front. June 2-8 will be “Alaska Week” and U.S. Sales and System Advertising have prepared a saturation campaign to make U.S. tourists Alaska conscious. Murray Barnes, System Advertising Manager, says that his end of it includes magazine and newspaper ads, commercials on See It Now, TV-radio tie-ins, expanded bookings of “Alaska—Pioneer Heritage,” displays and folders. Besides this merchandising, U.S. Sales, says Henry Beardsley, will accelerate promotion in key productive cities, increase the agency-interline program, designate June 2-8 “Alaska Week” across the country. Any Ideas? At the DSOs there will be: staff meetings to generate sales ideas, agents letters promoting Alaska, a review of all promotional supplies covering the area, a re-check of business travel possibilities. Alaska promotion material now includes several PAA folders: “Alaska and the Arctic—1957,” “Alaska is a Wonderful Place”, “Alaska — Hunting and Fishing Guide—1957,”—plus koda-chromes, posters, etc. System Pubrel is backing up the program with a background Alaska story and a news story on the hunting and fishing guide. The guide features a map showing where moose, bear, caribou, deer and mountain goat are most likely to be found, and tells fishermen the best rivers for salmon, trout and grayling. laurels. The Jets worked in visits to hospitals and rehabilitation centers, visits to towns like Petropolis (the mayor declared a holiday), TV interviews—and created a sensation wherever they went. They are back now at GAO—but look forward to another trip to South America, a more extensive one. 1 /
