Two prospective customers are given a “screen tour” of what they can expect to see when they take their trip. "ONE PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS" PÀÀ Introduces Travel Agents to A Practical, Novel Sales Medium A new “on the spot” sales technique designed to help the Agent sell travel on PAA will be employed by all U. S. District Sales Offices beginning December 1st. Through the medium of the tried and proven “One picture is worth a thousand words,” idea, the Visual Sales section of the Sales Promotion Department has placed at the disposal of all DSOs sample “Viewlex” projectors, a 20 x 18 inch screen, and complete sets of 2 x 2 inch kodachrome slides on Hawaii, Bermuda, Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean. Projector Handy Size It will be the job of the Outside Agency Sales Representatives at each of the DSOs to canvass their best Agents demonstrating to them the advantages of the projector and the effective means it offers to sell their customers on travel via PAA. The projector measuring 14 inches in length and 10 inches in height, can be set up on the Agent’s desk or sales counter and the color slides shown on the screen to prospective customers. A script running to about twenty-five words for each slide will also be provided to round out a unique sales kit. If the Agent agrees to purchase a projector which the Company can get for him at reduced cost, PAA will provide free of charge the Kodachrome slide sets complete with scripts. Four hundred sets have been made up in advance by the Visual Sales section to cover requests that come in from DSOs. There are thirty slides on Mexico and Guatemala, and Cuba and the Caribbean; twenty slides each on Hawaii and Bermuda. All have the caption “Fly PAA All The Way.” Tests Prove Effective An indication of how this sales promotion idea was received when first tested some months ago by Herb Milley on Travel Agents in the Eastern Region, is the fact that the first fifty approached immediately arranged to purchase the projector. The fact that the projector can be used by the Agent in the home of a prospective customer or before a group in their Club quarters, or as a display in his store window at night, makes the kit a profitable venture. The idea is a good one and from December 1st on it will be up to the Outside Agency Sales Representatives of DSOs to contact their best Travel Agents and sell them on its merits. TRAVEL DOLLAR VIEWED AS IMPORT TO AID WORLD ECONOMIC RECOVERY In an address before the American Tariff League at the Waldorf-Astoria last October 27th, President Juan T. Trippe compared American foreign trade to a “house built on sand” and urged the adoption of a six-point program of increased foreign travel to close the gap in our trade imbalance and as a step toward world economic recovery. Mr. Trippe said much of our r................................— <e> PAA Inaugurates New Service Between North-West and Japan-China PAA has filed schedules with the Civil Aeronautics Board calling for three round trips per week between the Pacific Northwest and Japan and China, it was recently announced by Vice-President Willis G. Lipscomb. The first PAA Clipper, which was the first plane to start scheduled service between the Northwest portion of the United States and Asia via HJR and the Central Pacific, left SEA and PDX on November 24 for SHA via HJR and TYO. The second flight departed the following Sunday for TYO via HJR. Presently flights will leave each week on Wednesday and Sunday. A third weekly flight will be instituted in March, 1949. Clippers will be equipped with “Sleeperette” seats for a comfortable night’s rest at no extra charge. The flights between SEA and SHA will take 52 hours. Stops will be made at PDX, HJR, AWK, and TYO enroute. Fares will be the same as those from SFO, $150 one-way to HJR, $650 to TYO and $726 to SHA. There will be a 10 per cent discount on round trips. Connections may be made at various points with PAA’s round-the-world schedules and with the company’s flights to Australia and New Zealand. Fares between the U.S. and Australia are subject to agreement under the terms of the U.S.-British bi-lateral treaty. PAA PASSENGER MILEAGE Pan American Airways Corporation announced that its majority-owned subsidiaries had flown 330,- 825.000 passenger miles during the third quarter of 1948, an increase of 31.663.000 miles or 11% over the previous quarter. Total miles flown were 17,049,834. In the third quarter of 1947, the subsidiaries flew 354,- 406.000 passenger miles and 16,576,-479 plane miles. goods shipped abroad is sold in “phony currencies for which we shall never be paid.” These huge sums will be repaid, he warned, “only through our acceptance every year of billions more of foreign goods and services.” Pointing out that “as a great creditor nation, we should be importing billions more of goods and services than we send out each year,” Mr. Trippe warned that “we must expand our imports, however, without cutting our export trade with Juan t. Trippe the free peoples of world. We must help other nations as well as ourselves, if our American way of life is to be secure.” Believing that it is Government’s job to lower the tariff walls we have erected, Trippe said: “We must do this to raise our own standard of living, to reduce our tax burden brought about by shipping goods abroad free, to further our security by saving friendly nations from economic chaos and Communism. While the national security sometimes requires the protection of uneconomic industries, can we longer justify the duty on such commodities as sugar, obtainable right here in our own hemisphere?” Mr. Trippe went on to say that “we still place a duty of fifty cents a hundred pounds on raw sugar from Cuba, and even more for other Western Hemisphere republics,” and questioned whether “we should not instead aim at a policy of strengthening the reciprocal economic bonds that spell friendship and produce dollars abroad for American products?” Mr. Trippe pointed out that we are sending our goods to millions throughout the world to help them rebuild, to rehabilitate their population and to preserve democracy against Communism.
