Sept./57 POLAR ROUTE TO LONDON from LOS ANGELES 5442 MILES SAN FRANCISCO 5346 PORTLAND 4893 SEATTLE 4801 PAD STARTS POLAR FLIGHTS SEPT. 10 On the morning of September 10 the Clipper Midnight Sun with Captain William Pryce, PAD’s Chief Check Pilot, in command,* will take off from San Francisco’s International airport on Pan American’s first scheduled Polar Route flight from the West Coast to Europe. That will be flight 124. The same day, at midnight, PAA/125 will take off from London for the Westbound trip. Flight 124’s sendoff will include a bag- __________________ pipe band skirling blood stirring strains as Mayor George Christopher of San Francisco and the Lord Mayor of London and mayor of Paris exchange greetings over a two-way loudspeaker-telephone hookup. The consuls general of Canada, Great Britain and France will give short congratulatory speeches and three girls, dressed to represent France, England and America will christen the route — at least a few yards thereof — with California champagne, French brandy and English ale. In the days before September 10 were scheduled both east and west-bound press flights carrying West Coast and SOPAC newsmen and radio and TV reporters to London and Paris and European jour- ATD'S WINTER PLANS: FRA, ROME GET NONSTOPS Occupying stage center in the Atlantic Division’s new Winter operating program are non-stop flights to both Frankfurt and Rome from New York. The coming season will also bring one-stop service to the Middle East, a sixth RTW flight (starting October 6) which will have Chicago and Detroit as new U.S. RTW gateways, a Frankfurt stop on all RTWs and maybe flights into Baghdad— giving a new terminal to the Istanbul-Ankara service. [SPECIAL — The Baghdad flights, three times a week, are now definite. They start October 6 as extensions of PA 64/65; on October 27 twice a week they will be extensions of ATD’s new Rome nonstop PA 66 flight, and once a week an extension of PA 64/65. Also, there’s news for Philadelphia and Boston on the RTW flights: the RTWs that depart those cities will be in DC-7C equipment, tough competition for TWA’s so-called “Jetstream.”] AD also has something to crow about in the variety of seating choices to be offered on its President flights in the Super Stratocruiser (see box below). The non-stops to Rome (three a week) and Frankfurt (daily) will be operated with DC-76 equipment in dual configuration. The Rome non-stops will leave New York every Sunday, Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. (arrive Rome at 2:45 p.m. next day). The Frankfurt non-stops will leave New York at 5:30 p.m. Continued on Page 5 MADRID FLIGHTS FROM MIA-SJU & NEW YORK Washington, Aug. 22 — Pan American today was awarded a new route across the south Atlantic between Miami and Rome with intermediate stops in San Juan, Lisbon and Madrid and in addition was given the right to fly into Madrid on its New York-South Africa service. ------------------------------ * With Captain Pryce will be ttvo of PAD’s most experienced Clipper skippers: F.S.K. “Scotty” Lewis and Fred Richards. Continued on Page 4 The route awards, recommended by the CAB and okayed by President Eisenhower, were part of the same route application filed two years ago. Both the state of Florida and the Puerto Rican government declared themselves in favor of Pan American’s south Atlantic application as being in the interests of the whole area; and in recommending to Preident Eisenhower that PAA be granted the right to operate the route the CAB said that to turn down the application “would result in the anomaly of abandoning a sizeable number of U.S. air passengers to foreign carriers.” In its applications for Madrid rights, PAA had the backing of the Spanish government. PAA First When it opens Miami-Rome service Pan American will be the first U.S. carrier to operate on this route. Iberia at present operates flights from Madrid to San Juan, Havana, Mexico City and Caracas (as well as Brazil).
