October, 1958 Jet Age Brings New Sales Opportunities Christened with the waters from the Seven Seas by the First Lady of the Land, the Jet Clipper America opens the Jet Age for the American Aviation industry, bringing with it both challenges and opportunities for Traffic/Sales personnel. Mrs. Eisenhower christened the Pan American Boeing 707 in ceremonies at National Airport, Washington, as leaders in government, aviation, transportation, industry, and publishing watched. Officials on Preview Flight The distinguished group of speakers included Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks; Under Secretary of State Christian A. Herter; H. M. Horner, Chairman, United Aircraft; Lt. Gen. Elwood R. Quesada, Special Assistant to the President; James R. Durfee, Chairman, CAB; and William M. Allen, President, Boeing Airplane Co. The blessing was given by Brig. Gen. Robert P. Taylor, Deputy Chief of Air Force Chaplains. Following the ceremonies, Mr. Trippe and a group of government officials and newspaper and magazine executives flew on a pre-inaugural jet trip to Europe. The U. S. Navy joined Pan Am in a world-wide effort which gathered waters representing the Seven Seas for use in the christening. Near the South Pole, the Navy took a sample of the waters of the Antarctic; Pan Am personnel in Australia sent a bottle of water from the South Pacific; in Brazil the water of the South Atlantic was collected; in New York the North Atlantic was sampled; at Frobisher, the Arctic Ocean lent its waters; and in Calcutta the Indian Ocean’s water was taken. Tradition Grows These, the waters of the Seven Seas, Mrs. Eisenhower used to christen the Jet The christening marked the fifth time Chief Executive has presided at ceremonies attending the introduction of a new Pan American Clipper. Previous sponsors and the Clippers they christened were Miss Margaret Truman, Boeing 377 double-deck Strato-cruiser, on March 5, 1949; Mrs. Franklin D. Daily Jet Clipper Schedule Begins Oct. 26 The first daily-scheduled transatlantic jet service will be inaugurated by Pan Am with flights between New York, Paris, and Rome on Oct. 26. Daily Jet Clipper flights between New York and London will start on Nov. 16. Pan Am’s Paris-bound flights will depart from Idlewild at 7 P.M. and arrive at Le Bourget Airport in Paris the next morning at 8 A.M., Paris local time, and Rome at 11:20 A.M. The return flights will depart from Rome at 3 P.M., arrive at Paris an hour and 55 minutes later. They will depart from Paris for New York at 6 P.M., arriving at Idlewild at 9:25 P.M. the same evening. The London-bound flights will depart from Idlewild at 10 A.M. and arrive at London at 9:35 P.M. that night. The return flights will depart from London at 11 A.M. and arrive at 2:45 P.M. Pan Am will offer both President Special and Economy service on the Jet Clippers with no increase in fares. The number of deluxe and Economy seats will vary to meet demand. 7.
