November, 1959 New Firsts' Reassert Pan Am Leadership Jet Flight Around World A Jet Clipper took the American flag on the first round-the-world commercial jet flight, cutting flight time nearly in half. The historic flight on October 10 chalked up another decisive “first” for Pan American. Two weekly round-the-world flights are now dispatched by Pan Am—one eastward from New York on Saturdays, and the other westward from Los Angeles on Sundays. Later, Pan Am round-the-world jet service will be extended to six a week. Jet Clippers reduce round-the-world flying time from 66 hours to less than 38. Elapsed time is cut down to scarcely more than two days. Stops are made at London, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Beirut, Continued on Page 9 Full Year of Jet Service In the first year of jet operations Pan American has provided service with the big Boeing jets to 21 cities overseas, flying to South America, across the Pacific, from the West Coast to London, and around the world. Pan American, since it inaugurated the first American-flag jet service on October 26, 1958, has flown over 210,000 jet passengers, Willis G. Lipscomb, Vice President of Traffic and Sales, said. Of this total, 189,000 were transatlantic passengers. The popularity of the jets, combined with the public preference for the Economy fare, and frequent jet schedules to all of Pan Am's major traffic centers, will result in a 20 per cent increase in travel over the Company’s worldwide Continued on Page 7 Jet Clippers To Caribbean The steadily-expanding scope of Jet Clipper service will spread starting November 21 to Puerto Rico and then on December 10 to four other new cities in the Caribbean area. And, the once-a-week service to Asuncion and Buenos Aires, via Caracas, is now expanded to twice a week. By December 10, Pan Am’s worldwide jet network will reach San Juan, Ciudad Trujillo, Nassau, Montego Bay, and Miami. Pan American will inaugurate the first true jet airliner service to Puerto Rico on Nov. 21. At first the Jet Clippers will make four flights a week between New York and San Juan and four a week between Miami/San Juan. Lipscomb, Vice President Traffic and Sales, announced. “These new low rates for bulk air freight shipments will open up the U. S.-Orient market to thousands of shippers and importers who previously have been unable to use air transport to develop this rich and growing market,” Mr. Lipscomb said.
