Seek fare reductions to Orient A m ajor reduction in fa res between the U nited States and the F a r E ast, including a 23 per cent cut in the New York-Tokyo fare, will be offered by Pan Am su b ject to approval of the govern m ents concerned. The new fa res will coincide w ith P an Am’s in aug u ratio n of New Y ork-Fairbanks-Tokyo G reat Circle service on Sept. 1. Pan Am’s plan calls fo r lower Economy and F irs t Class fa res between the U.S. and Jap an on G reat Circle flights, and 14-21 day ro u n d trip ex cursion and bulk fa res via all routings between the U.S. and Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Bangkok, M anila, Saigon, Singapore and D jakarta. Pan Am, w hich introduced the $100 T h rift fa re to Hawaii, has long favored reduced Pacific fares, Norm an P. Blake, senior vice-president of m ark et ing, said. “We believe,” he added, “th a t the introduction of excursion and bulk fa res in the Pacific re p re sent a valuable m arketing tool for the developm ent of two-way trad e and tourism . “The new U .S.-Japan fa re stru c tu re has been designed to more closely relate the cost of travel to the actual m ileage flown,” he continued. U nder the new fa re stru ctu re, Mr. Blake explained, a passenger trav elin g between the U.S. and Jap an via the G reat Circle route will be charged a lower fa re than a passenger trav elin g betw een the U.S. and Jap an via a central Pacific routing. A ir m ileage between New York and Tokyo over the G reat Circle route via F airb an k s is 6,784 v er sus 8,818 miles via the W est Coast and H aw aii. Elapsed flight tim e on Pan Am’s new “G reat Circle E xpress” service from New York to Tokyo via F airb an k s will be 151/2 hours, or five hours fa ste r th an New York-Tokyo flights via the W est Coast and Hawaii. U nder Pan Am’s new fa re stru ctu re , the New Y ork-Japan Economy and F ir s t Class fa re s to be offered on G reat Circle flights via Fairbanks will be 10 per cent below the carrier’s existing New Y ork-Japan fa res via the W est Coast and Hawaii. Between the W est Coast and Japan, Economy and F irs t Class fa res on P an Am’s Great Circle flights will be five per cent below the c a rrie r’s existing fa res over the W est Cost-Hawaii-Japan routing. The new fa re stru c tu re includes reductions in basic and peak season fares. Peak season fares be tween the U.S. and Jap an are applicable during July, A ugust, Septem ber and October for travel from the U.S., and during June, July, August and Septem ber fo r trav el to the U.S. Economy Excursion Fares P an Am’s plan calls fo r a basic 14-21 day roundtrip Economy excursion fa re of $706 on flights between New York and Tokyo via Fairbanks.
