Vast $3 million cargo terminal opens in SFO SAN FRANCISCO—A vast $3 million air cargo terminal was dedicated by Pan Am at San Francisco International Airport Dec. 11. The facility, largest of its kind on the West Coast, willhandle Pan Am’s growing air cargo shipments to the Pa cific and Orient, Europe and South America. Harold L. Graham vicepresident in charge of Cargo Sales, spoke at the dedication attended by top civic and busi ness leaders in the San Fran cisco Bay area. A squad of pretty girls at tired in colorful costumes from the four corners of the earth joined gilded chains to a world globe symbolizing the worldwide links of modern jet cargo. A round dozen stewardesses also took part in the dedica tion ceremonies, which in cluded the pouring of a bottle of saki, symbolic of growing trade with Japan. It wasn’t too many years ago that Pan Am Cargo handlers here stacked pack ages in a small room that measured no more than 50 feet in either direction/ The brand new facility would cover a football field with plenty of room to spare —a total of 101,000 square feet. The gleaming building _and adjacent parking and ramp areas cover seven and a half acres. It is equipped throughout with the latest mechanized gear able to handle contain erized shipments swiftly. Goods are preloaded onto pal lets which are slipped di rectly into the cargo bays of 707 all-cargo Jet Clippers, The equipment supplied by California-based Food Ma chinery Corporation includes automated rollerized pallet receiving systems, eight dock levelers for ease in loading and unloading trucks, and nine pallet loading pits. There is a livestock room incorporating tem perature and humidity control. There are refrigerator rooms. United States Customs of ficials will operate from their new airport ~ headquarters established within the Pan Am Cargo Terminal. An IBM Card punch inven tory system will keep a roundthe-clock check on shipments on a minute-by-minute basis. These are but a few of the innovations. - At present,' Pan Am han dles 14 million pounds of cargo and mail monthly at San Francisco International Airport. A 15 per cent in crease is estimated during 1969, while the present rate is expected to be doubled within a decade. Speed and ease of cargo handling on a grand Scale are paramount factors. When the Boeing 707’s and the com bing 747 Superjets glide, up to the loading ramps direct from the field, they will be swiftly unloaded, loaded again and turned around for maximum aircraft utiliza tion. In this typical Digicom'mes sage, the aircraft, N778PA, is identified as Flight 211—New York to San Juan flight.. “Route 3” is a code indicating the airway routing fhe aircraft is using. “Fix 14-14” is another code which gives the aircraft’s position in aeronautical terms. The top mes sage also gives a time check, 1557 Green wich time, and the flight level, 37,000 feet. The message code number 390 signifies that the crew is reporting a weather condition of light icing. Numerous message code num bers are available: “100” series messages are operational type; “200” series, mainte nance type; “300” series, weather type; and, “400” series, passenger service type. The second message indicates aircraft en gine performance. The term “Reg Cruise” means that the aircraft is cruising at 37,000 feet. This line on the message also could signify that the aircraft is on the ground, climbing, descending, or in a holding pat tern. Other information in the message in cludes the ram air temperature (RAT); the high and low spool speeds of the engines (N -l and N-2); the exhaust gas tempera ture (EGT); the engine pressure ratio (EPR); and fuel flow (FF).
