The pictu res w ere tra n sm it ted from London to New York via the E arly B ird Communica tions S atellite in a unique dem onstration of th e potential application of earth -o rb itin g satellites to airlin e communi cations. The photo facsim ile equip ment used fo r the dem onstra tion was fu rn ish ed by M uirhead Instrum ents Co. and RCA Com m unications Inc. P an Am also used th e satellite for voice com m unication w ith the a irc ra ft when it was aloft over th e A tlantic. Vice P re si dent-Com m unications W. Waldo Lynch, on th e 49th floor of the Pan Am B uilding in m idtown M anhattan, and C aptain D arrell L. Rogers, on the flight deck of Jet Clipper 103, renam ed Jet Clipper E arly B ird fo r the occa sion, discussed w eath er condi tions. It was the first tim e such two-way contact has been estab lished w ith an a irc ra ft in flight through an o rb itin g satellite. Via E arly Bird, in statio n ary orbit 22,300 miles above the Equator, P an Am also in itiated and confirmed sim ulated airline and hotel reservations between (Continued on Page 11) Global Cargo Runs To Be a New 'First' Pan American Airways will record another aviation “first” on July 1 when it inaugurates scheduled round-theworld all-cargo jet services tieing 17 of the world’s major industrial centers to what in effect will be a global freight conveyor belt. J u s t as P an Am introduced the first round-the-w orld p as senger service in June, 1947, its je t fre ig h te rs will be th e first to gird the ea rth w ith all cargo flights criss-crossing the globe both eastbound and w est bound. “R ound-the-w orld je t fre ig h t er flights will open up new op p o rtu n ities fo r prom otion of A m erican exports to th e w orld’s m ajor in d u strial centers and will serve as an im p o rtan t tool in the n atio n ’s efforts to ease the balance of paym ents prob lem,” H arold L. Graham , Vice P resident-C argo Sales said. T he firs t ro u n d -th e -w o rld flight will head w estbound from San F rancisco a t 9:45 p.m. Thursday, Ju ly 1, and will a r rive 79 hours and 5 m inutes la te r in New York a fte r stops a t Honolulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, New Delhi, K arachi, B eirut, Vienna, M unich, S tu tt g art, F ra n k fu rt, London, Shan non and New York. H arold E. Gray, P resid en t of P an Am, said th a t P an Am would provide direct je t service to the C anary Islands on two of its routes. The service would be offered over P an Am’s midA tlantic route between Miami, San Ju a n and points in South ern Europe, and over the c a rri e r’s route between New York and points in A frica. P an Am is prep ared to begin the new je t service as soon as necessary governm ent approv als have been obtained.
