Trippe, President, announced on Feb. 19 in a pre liminary year end report. Nonstops to Tahiti Debut on May 2 Nonstop Jet Clipper service between the West Coast of the United States and Tahiti, reducing the 4,000-mile expanse of the Pacific Ocean to a flight of a little more than eight nours, will be inaugurated on May 2. The new W est C oast-T ahiti nonstop supplem ents P an Am’s flights between the U nited S tates and T ah iti via H aw aii, w hich were in au g u rated last Decem ber. T his sp rin g and sum mer, fo r the first time, passen gers will be able to fly one way to th e South Pacific island non stop and th en re tu rn via H a waii, fo r the sam e fare. The new T ah iti flights leave San F rancisco on S atu rd ay s a t 10 p.m. and Los Angeles at 11:59 p.m., a rriv in g a t Papeete, T ahiti, a t 5:15 a.m., local time. E astbound flights leave T ah iti on Sundays a t 8:45 p.m. and a r rive a t Los Angeles a t 7 :45 a.m. and a t San F rancisco a t 9:45 a.m. Monday. O ur flights via H aw aii leave Los Angeles on M ondays a t 9 a.m., arriv e a t Honolulu a t 11 :10 a.m., and a t P apeete a t 6:25 p.m. E astbound flights leave on Tuesdays a t 8:25 a.m., a rriv in g a t Honolulu a t 2 p.m. and in Los A ngeles a t 1 1 :25 p.m. Los A n geles to P apeete time, via H a waii, is 12 hours and 25 m in utes, including a one h o u r and 50 m inutes stop a t Honolulu. In addition to th e Economy fa re of $754.20 fo r u n re stric ted trav e l to T ah iti e ith e r via H a w aii or nonstop, P an Am also offers a group fa re of $557.30 fo r persons trav e lin g in groups of 15 or more. P an Am also pro vides a 23-day ro u n d trip excur sion fa re to T ah iti of $600 fo r individual travel. Easter Pax To Berlin Set Records An all-time record num ber of passengers was carried on our flights linking W est B erlin w ith m ajor cities in W est Germ any over the E a ste r holidays. The DC-6B In tra Germ an Services Clippers flew a total of 27,470 passengers in and out of B erlin d u rin g the five-day period from M arch 26 th ro u g h M arch 30. A single-day record was es tab lish ed on M arch 26 w ith 8,183 passengers on 99 flights, 37 of w hich were ex tra sections. N et income fo r 1963 was $33,573,000, or $5.13 per share, a new high, and up 124 per cent over the record $15,007,000 or $2.23 per share, earned in 1962. O perating revenues fo r 1963 were $560,917,000, up 11.3 per cent over th e previous record $503,916,000 reported fo r 1962. O p e ra tin g e x p e n se s w ere $481,826,000 in 1963, an increase of 5 p er cent over the $458,899,000 incurred the p re vious year. N et income before income taxes fo r 1963 was $68,714,000, com pared to $30,952,000 th e p re vious year. As I step out of th e cockpit, it seems to me th a t aviation and I are arriv in g a t a crucial point. The a r t of flying, as I have known it, is p assin g and I am beginning to feel as out-of-date as those who m anned fu ll rigged ships, drove p ra irie schooners or engaged in com bat in arm oured suits. Smoke on th e horizon spelled doom fo r sailing ships. The ro a r a t lau n ch in g pads h in ts th a t our je t skippers are heading fo r space. W here I have been and w h at I have done is of sm all im port to anyone b u t m yself. Any records I have m ade w ere due to stro n g tailw inds and th a t I have never scratch ed an airp lan e I owe as m uch to all of you in the a ir and on th e ground as I do to m yself. I am leaving feeling deeply g ra te fu l to all w ith whom I have worked and flown. The sp irit of m utual dependence, of doing a job to gether, is one of the g re a te st satisfactio n s of o ur job. The airplanes, I will m iss them b u t I am developing oth er in tere sts to take th e ir place. My frie n d s — no th in g in the w orld can ever replace them . To the com pany and those who guide it I owe a g re at debt. The vision of aviation they shaped into being gave my life m eaning beyond my fo n d est dream s. To phase out of active life takes p erhaps more g uts th a n ph asin g into it. F rom now on it is up to me w ith o u t a crew to pick up th e pieces. I w an t to w rite a book or two, read, study abroad and in between ride my bike and do some skiing. It is not going to be easy. To give up flying is like ending a love affair. It h u rts b u t one gets over it.
