A forklift wheeled, lifted the box and hoisted it to the cargo door of a Jet Clipper about to leave London for Idlewild. It was an ordinary-looking box. But its contents were very extraordinary. Inside were 10,000 precious vials of Sabin oral polio vaccine, frozen solid for the transatlantic trip. Each vial contained from 10 to 100 polio vaccine doses. Inside also was enough dry ice to pack a 6-inch depth around a chest holding the vials. The ice was to maintain a temperature of minus 20 degrees Centigrade. Surrounding the vials and the dry ice was a 4-inch wall of styrofoam insulation to help maintain that low temperature during transshipment from Sandwich, Kent, some 75 miles south of London, to the Chas. It means goods from Europe, for instance, on the way to Central and South America can make aircraft exchanges without delays, except for presentation of the cargo manifest. Big gain is that reduced paperwork will speed air cargo deliveries to final destinations. Direct N.Y.-Jamaica Jets Daily non-stop Jet Clippers from New York to Montego Bay, and on to Kingston, now provide shippers with three and one-half hour service for goods moving to Jamaica. Inauguration of the service by Pan Am adds daily flights from New York to an existing nine flights out of Miami. Flights leave Idlewild at 9:45 a.m., arrive at Montego Bay at 1:15 p.m., and at Kingston at 2:15 p.m. Returning they depart Kingston daily at 3:30 p.m., arrive Montego Bay at 4:30 p.m., and land in New York at 8 p.m. The new service provides direct air cargo lift to the island and beyond, and adds another link to Pan Am’s already extensive network of Jet service throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. ***** Fast Cargo Growth Over the past five years Pan Am’s revenue cargo ton-miles jumped 75% —91,600,000 in 1956 to 160,000,000 (Continued on Page 8) * Trademark Reg.
