N#WS LETTER F°R tHE transpacific DIVISION fami«. rni, amebican world airways VOL. II NO. 10 ' ' TREASURE ISLAND MARCH 1. 1944 UTILITY SHOP $ INSPECTION GROUP MAKE PLAWLESS RECORD In the Maintenance Department, the Utility Shop and the Inspection Group completed the year 1943 without any lost-time injuries. Yielding went through to September with a flawless record but in that month two minor injuries occurred, although neither involved more than one day’s lost time* Shops which came through the year with only one injury were: Propellers, of which ’’pop" Eubanks is Chief; Accessory, of which S.O. McDonald is Chief; paint, of which "Vic" Freeland is Chief; Radio, of which H.L. Walsh is Chief; and Guards, of which Pat Henry is Chief, Thus Treasure Island has made a safety record worthy of being rated as a real contribution to the war effort. We would like to know just how we rate along with the other divisions, particularly Seattle and North Beach, and Industrial Safety Superintendent Dave Canty has promised to let us know, Canty tells us that the perfect record of Utility Shop is particularly commendable because of the numerous potential hazards that must be overcome in the varied tasks of that outfit* Utility Shop has traity-three men under Chief Fred Phillips and Sub-Chief "Wes" Tatro, Their duties are sometimes referred to as "anything and everything". They dig up water mains one day, fix windows another and day after tomorrow you may find them installing a new anemometer on top of the Control Tower, highest spot at our TSL te.se. One of their jobs which involved possible hazards was changing the overhead lamps in Hangar "C" without benefit of cat-walks. When the Phillips’ crowd rolled through Nov, without any accident, they knew they were headed for a record. In December, they were more safety-conscious than ever before, if such a thing is possible* PRAISED 3Y CANTY Industrial Safety Supt. Canty says that "These employees should be highly praised not only for the demonstration of safety in their own work, but for having taken an active part In injecting safety-consciousness through other departments. Both Utility Shop and Inspection may well be proud of their records." The entire Maintenance Dept, made progress safety«*wise in 1^43, January,’43 recorded thirteen accidents among 680 employees bub in January, 1944 there w©re only seven accidents for approximately 1100 men, TOTALLY AT WAR UNTIL VICTORY PAA CONTRIBUTES $225,000WAR FINANCE SUBSCRIPTION CREDITED TO THIS DIVISION In making a large purchase of U.S,Treasury Certificates as its participation in the 4th War Loan, Pan American Airways allocated $225,000 of its purchase to the Pacific-Alaska Division, Announcement of this allocation was made by the War Finance Committee in the San Francisco Chronicle of Feb, 16, 1944, The subscription has been credited to the 4th War Loan Quota of Northern California*
