Klein Mitchell, Pan Am’s resident representative at the Boeing plant, accepted the jet airliner. Boeing was represented by J. B. Connelly, vice president and general manager of its transport division. The 707 was accepted under a provisional operating certificate issued by the CAA. This will allow Pan Am to operate revenue cargo flights between San Juan and New York and to conduct crew training flights. Here two Sydney secretaries do their bit for the cause, despite the fact that it’s winter in Australia. Scooping up a quart of Bondi Beach surf are Audrey Watson, left, and Barbara Kerwick. On September 28th Pan American will inaugurate service to Melbourne. At the same time all flights between Australia and the United States will be operated with DC-7C equipment. Four round-trips weekly are scheduled between Melbourne and the West Coast. Routing will be via Sydney, Nandi and Honolulu. Not only will the 7C’s fly faster than the B-377’s they replace, but their longer range will permit non-stop operations between Nandi and Honolulu. As a result of over-flying Canton, better connections at Honolulu and the greater speed of the DC-7C the total elapsed time between Sydney and the U.S. will be nine hours less than the B-377 schedule. The Pan Am schedule will be eight and a half hours faster than that of any other airline flying between Australia and the West Coast. The Nandi-based DC-4 will continue to provide service between Nandi and Auckland. Present plans call for the removal of all Pan Am personnel from Canton Island when the DC-7C service starts. Division Praised For Fire Prevention Record The week of October 5-11 has been designated “Fire Prevention Week.” The Pacific-Alaska Division has been fortunate during the past year in that it added no statistics to the appalling loss of property and human life caused by fire. Commenting on the good record, Russ Smith, plant fire prevention officer, said, “I am very proud and thankful for the conscientious efforts of all employees that have contributed to our achievement—not only in preventing fires, but also in combating those that did break out.” "Good Neighbor" Drive -- Give It All You Can The annual “Good Neighbor” drive will be conducted next month at PAD headquarters. This campaign, held in conjunction with the United Bay Area Crusade, offers employees their only opportunity to contribute to the many agencies who have banded together under the United Crusade banner. The exact dates for the drive have not yet been set, but it will be conducted in much the same manner as in previous years. Employees will have the option of contributing either by payroll deduction or cash. Give generously when you are asked. Not only will you be helping those less fortunate than yourself, but you will be helping yourself by providing funds necessary for a better, healthier community. At the speed of sound the skin temperature of an aircraft flying at 35,000 feet is less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but at Mach 4 the skin temperature is 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. CURRENCY EVENT Named to head the “Good Neighbor” drive at San Francisco this year is Norb Ferreira of Supply. Theme of his campaign is MONEY
