TRY YSPY A NEWS LETTER FOR EMPLOYEES OF THE TRANSPACIFIC DIVISION, PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS ‘ v6l. NO, I August 1, 1943 IN THE NEWS Captain J. H. Hamilton and his crew of the 7088 received attention in the press of the nation thiss week end when the Navy in Washington released the story of their forced landing at sea several hundred miles from Honolulu in a Navy transport airplane operated by Pan American Airways• The 7088 got into difficulty when propeller trouble made it necessary to shut down the No» 1 engine, and difficulties increased when the propeller continued to ’’windmill", thus acting as a brake» It became necessary first to shut down the No* 4 engine to avoid going into a tight turn, and then to land on the ocean which was boiling up 20-foot swells. Pan American Airways’ emergency tech-lique came into play—every member of the trew carried out his appointed task--and the landing was amazingly successful. The- strain of the landing opened up some of the seams in the hull, which were temporarily patched as far as possible, and a bailing detail set to work to account for leaks that could not be so repaired. Then began a vigil of 42 hours on the water with the 7083 going up and down like an elevator. Practically everybody aboard was desperately seasick, but the bailing went ahead nevertheless* Meanwhile flight control ashore was organizing the rescue operation. First Captain W. B. Biggers flew to the indicated position to locate the aircraft, arriving overhead within four hours. The following morning Captain PI. J. Beyer in another airplane reached the scene to stand by overhead. Thin Captain 0. F* Maxwell, bringing spare parts for the (continued on page 2) SUGGESTION AWARDS At the meeting- of the Suggestion Committee, held on July 16, the following employees were recommended for cash awards in recognition of the suggestions which they submitted and which have been adopted: J. F. McRae - Elimination of aluminum dope on the B-314- and' M-330 aircraft, E. A. Frei - "Jumper Wire" to be used for trouble shooting on magnetos on R-1830-88 engines. Stanford Gluck - A method of protection for the anti-flutter vanes. . - J. C. Dobrusky - Additional support for magneto grouncf wires to prevent failures. H. R. Colby - New method of painting the Lord Mounts. K. Vi. Nelson - Screen cover for the gene rator voltage regulators* R. Olney - Elimination of present cover on generator voltage regulators, using a grill-work guard in order to prevent overheating. Joseph Lusareta - Final check of certain beaching gear to ensure its being put on correctly. Thomas Lane - Substitute for the spot facers now in use. C. M. Sims - Installation of Machetes on all docks. Thomas Lane - Magnetic method of locating rivetsr B. A. Meves - Canvas .holder for the Mark VII Navigator’s Computer. Lee Bendull - Revision in method of routing thermocouple wiring to the cylinder on P&W motors. 0. X. . Ilber/t - Placing of 55-gal Ion drum on the roof of the Pump House for use in emergency priming of the power pump. To win cash awards suggestions must effect an improvement in quality, speed, safety or economy.
