Read From California to Calcutta, From Alaska To Australasia Voi. 10 No. 5 PUBLISHED BY THE EMPLOYEES OF PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS 22nd YEAR PAA HAS FLOWN IN ALASKA March 4, 1954 PAA First With a Closed Circuit TV Sales Meet Travel Agents Throughout U. S. See Show in Their Home Towns One week ago Pan American pioneered the use of closed circuit television for the travel industry when 2,500 travel agents throughout the nation listened to a talk by Willis G. Lipscomb, PAA vice president for traffic and sales. The PAA telecast was the third largest of its kind in the size of audience and number of outlets according to Box Office Television, New York producers who arranged the project. Bay Area travel agents saw the telecast at the Telenews Theater in San Francisco. They saw and heard Vice President Lipscomb predict that 1954 would be the greatest year ever for the travel industry. “There are 40 million people in the country now with paid vacations,” he said, “and there is now five times the discretionary spending power in the population as compared with pre-war days.” Other PAA officials were on the program as well, including the PAD’s Executive Vice President, C. M. Young. Use of this unique method of presentation enabled the company to present its sales message to every agent simultaneously. Symphony Memberships Now Available Thru Panair Club San Francisco employees interested in becoming members of the San Francisco Symphony Foundation can get full details from their SFO Panair Club. A $10 membership entitles the member and one other person to attend a free concert, free rehearsals, advance program notes and the opportunity to meet members of the orchestra. This is an opportunity for those employees interested in the symphony to get a little extrd for their money while helping a very worthwhile movement. You Might Say Menlo Park Threw the Book at Jack Peak PAD Facilitation Superintendent Jack Peak has been elected chairman of the newly created Board of Library Trustees in Menlo Park. For some time he has been serving on a committee that has been studying the means by which Menlo Park could form its own library rather than depend on that operated by San Mateo County. This new board was set up after the committee made its recommendations. The city will cooperate with the county for the present, but will eventually take over complete operation of its own library. Pan American Stockholders To Receive March Dividend Meeting in New York, the directors of Pan American have declared a dividend of 20 cents a share, payable March 10th. This is the 37th dividend paid by PAA. EVEN THE VEEP GOES THRU CHANNELS Television channels, that is. PAD Advertising Manager Bill Pocock is going over final details with Colonel Young as technicians from Photo and Sound Production of San Francisco prepare to shoot the PAD executive vice president for his part on last week’s closed circuit TV sales meeting. Some Rat Caught Pilfering The Cash Box at Guam A Pan American official recently caught a culprit dipping into the cash box in the Guam traffic office. Surprised as he was munching on a five dollar bill, after previously having chewed up an airwaybill and a ticket, the rat fled through a hole that he had gnawed in the back of the drawer. Asked to describe the fugitive, DTSM George Selwyn replied, “Well, you’ve seen one rat— you’ve seen ’em all. He walked with a slouch, had very definite criminal-type eyes and a weak chin—and oh yes, I detected a strong smell of cheese on his breath.” (George’s attention is called to an ad in today’s “I Wanna” column. It could be the solution). Fourteen PAD'ers Net 62,177 Tip-Top Points PAD's Position in Doubt as System-Wide Standings Not In The stretch run is on in the PAA Tip-Top Sales Contest, and the PAD came up with another good performance for the past two weeks. Due to delays in tabulating the results it was not known at press time whether this latest surge was enough to hoist the PAD out of the cellar or not. Purser A1 Lonstron of SFO got the biggest chunk of points in the period just ended—14,134. Right behind him came the new division pace setter, Robin Kinkead of Pub-rel with 9,384 points. Other point-getters during the past two weeks include Dick Ott of LAX Supply, 7,957, Nina Shank of SFO Medical, 7,182, SFO Captain “Scotty” Lewis, 5,956, SFO stewardess Evelyn David, 4,339, Ray Runnels of SEA Communications, 2,419, Les Wollner of LAX Cargo, 2,419, SEA co-pilot Marshall Stenstrom, 2,250, Hal Hollingshead of SFO Art Group, 1,210, Peggy Leif of LAX Supply, 1,210, and a trio with. 900 points—Burt Martel of SFO Metal Shop, SFO co-pilot John Mc-Geoghegan and Jack Wilder of SFO Cargo. Standings of the four teams— Atlantic, LAD, PAD, and System— will be published next issue. It’s a common sight in Ireland to see local fishermen walk into a hotel lobby bearing a 15 pound salmon and after a little haggling sell it to the desk clerk for the hotel tables.
