CLIPPER PAN AMERICAN • P A C I F I C - A L A S K A DIVISION Read From The Land Of The Kodiak To The Land Of The Koala—From The Golden Gate To The Ginza Vol. 14 No. 11—12 November-December, 1958 Jet Clippers Smash Records Across Atlantic Taking advantage of jet stream winds which ranged from 95 to 125 mph, mph, Pan Am’s new 707 Jet Clippers smashed four trans - Atlantic commercial speed records in early December. The parade of records began on December 8 when the 71 OP A flew from London to New York in 8 hours 13 minutes, despite head winds. Average ground speed was 506 mph. The next day, Clipper 711PA roared from New York to Paris in 6 hours 16 minutes, averaging 634 mph. Then on December 10 the 710PA made it from New York to London in only 5 hours 50 minutes. The average ground speed was 626 mph. Captain Ben Harrell, PAD’S chief check pilot, was a crew member. Resulting from your collective efforts the division has weathered the business recession in commendable fashion, and while doing so has built solidly for this jet age of air transportation. The coming year should provide us with increased opportunities to improve and to expand Pan American’s services in the Pacific-Alaska area for the mutual benefit of all concerned. The accent of the holiday season properly is on friendship, family ties and goodwill to all men. Murray, Jr. Executive Vice-President Jet Servicer Economy Fare Highlight Year A year of dramatic changes and towering challenges goes into the record book for Pan Am as 1958 bows out. This was the eventful year in which the Jet Age and the Economy fare were born—and were quickly mated in a major onslaught in Pan Am’s continuing campaign to achieve fast travel at low fares. A Pan Am Jet Clipper became airborne shortly after 7:00 p.m. on October 26 and as it climbed to a cruising altitude nearly seven miles high, it carried American commercial aviation into the Jet Age. For the Company, it was the climax to years of planning, testing and training. The first passenger flight on October 26 climaxed a sequence (Continued on Page 4)
