Vol. 14 No. 5 PUBLISHED BY THE EMPLOYEES OF PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS May 1958 IT'S TIME FOR A CLEAN SWEEP The week of May 12-16 has been proclaimed as “Clean Up Week” throughout the division. During this week all employees are urged to give the heave-ho to bent hairpins, empty kleenex boxes, old 49er programs, last year’s time-tables, broken wrenches, empty instant coffee jars and out-moded chemises. Cooperation in this campaign will not only assure a neater work area but will also eliminate fire and accident hazards. COMMUNITY AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT Former Olympic 400 Meter Champion Bill Carr Engaged To Develop Community Relations Program DC-7C Service To Be Extended To Tokyo June 1st The Pacific - Alaska Division will inaugurate DC-7C service to Tokyo on June 1st. Of the daily service provided between the West Coast and Tokyo, three round-trips weekly will be operated with the 7C’s. This arcraft time will come from that currently being used for charter operations. Also commencing on June 1st, all DC-7C’s operating in the Pacific area will have sleeperette seats for first-class passengers. On April 27th the sleeperette seats were taken off the DC-7C’s on the Polar route, except for those flights offering de luxe first-class service (three of the seven weekly trips). SAS Starts Three Weekly Trips Over Polar Route To Tokyo SAS began thrice - weekly service between Copenhagen and Tokyo over the Polar route last month. One stop is made at Anchorage. TAKES NEW POST Meet Bill Carr, Manager, Community Affairs for the PAD. The former Olympic and world record holder in the 400 meter dash has the job of implementing a program to further develop the division’s participation in community affairs. Announcement was made last month of the appointment of William A. “Bill” Carr to the new post of Manager, Community Affairs, for the Pacific-Alaska Division. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in 1933, Bill reached the pinnacle of athletic fame one year previous in the Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. As a member of the U.S. Olympic team, Bill sped around the Coliseum track to win the 400 meter dash in the world record time of 46.2 seconds. Today the world record for the distance is 45.2 seconds— which means that in 26 years the world record has only been lowered by the amount of time it takes to say “Pan American Airways” — if you’re a fast talker! Bill was a member of the United States’ 1600 meter relay team that also set a world record in the 1932 Olympics. Despite these successes, he said that his greatest thrill was in 1955 when he was named to the all-time U.S. Olympic team. After graduating from college Bill joined the Insurance Company of North America, working in production planning and management. This career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Navy. He was discharged with the rank of commander. Following the war he returned to the Insurance Company of North America and was put in charge of its Far East opera-continued on page 13) "Give And Let Live" On May 16th At San Francisco Friday, May 16th, is blood donation day at San Francisco. On that date a crew from the Peninsula Memorial Blood Bank will be at the base from 8:30 until 1:00 p.m. Their equipment will be set up in the old Service department headquarters in the cafeteria building. Any employee who has not yet signed up can still donate blood by calling Jean Duggin in Personnel, extension 417, for an appointment. Last year employees and their dependents used 110 units of blood from the Pan Am account. In order to continue this lifesaving service it is necessary that this amount be replenished. Remember, your blood can save a life. IHC last month announced the election of Charles Nielsen as treasurer. WHAT'S THE BEEF In order to help out the youngsters of California, Pan American purchased this 900-pound steer at the recent Junior Livestock Show at San Francisco’s Cow Palace. Henry Johnson, chef-manager of the cafeteria, is shown with Phil Cody of Hanford, who raised the steer.
