F. Mailroom Earns Suggestion Award Bangkok Operations Man Is Sent Letter of Commendation The head of the San Francisco mail room, Ken Eisler, has proved that maintenance men are not the only, ones eligible to collect from the ever spending Suggestion Committee. Eisler submitted the idea of eliminating the use of the San Francisco post office address. The South San Francisco post office box is now used because of his suggestion. It expi-dites mail service at the base. Eisler has been awarded $10.00. Another non-maintenance man, Last Minute News Bulletin A cat, three kittens and a canary were on the same Alaska-bound Pan American Clipper this week. The canary arrived at Ketchikan intact. Fred Scobey, Operations man stationed at Bangkok, has received a letter of commendation for his suggestion which brought about the investigation of our departure procedures for wheel safety locks at the various stations. His recommendation has resulted in a standard departure procedure being published in the Operations Manual. The only other money winner for the month was Bob Ritchey, of the Jig Room. He has collected several times for various suggestions. This time it was his idea to substitute a different size rubberized asbestos seal for use on the DC-4 fireseal. It has proven to save one-half hour on each engine build-up. Other letters of commendation went to John Felder, of Stores, and Frank McQueen, qf the Radio Shop. The former suggested the addition of ladders to hangar stock bins. However, past experience has shown ladders or steps could not be controlled and the Committee recommended the situation should be surveyed as to the possibility of lowering the stock bins. McQueen constructed an adapter to allow one man to make loop alignment adjustments on the ADF receivers. Seattle Fire Crew Commended Fire Chief Smith, of the King County Airport, has commended the Seattle PAA volunteer section of the Airport Fire Department for their prompt work in extinguishing the airplane fire which occured at the north end of the airport on August 21. Dan Cupid this week lured the first airline stewardesses to fly the Pacific away from their jobs with Pan American World Airways. After flying for more than two years and traveling a total of over 437,000 miles, Mary Lyman and Beverly Mogensen are leaving to make plans for November weddings. Her husband-to-be is William (Bill) Cowden, captain of the Stanford basketball team in 1941 and all-American basketball guard for two years. He was also Captain of the Dardi Dandies, crack San Francisco entry in the American League in 1946. DC-6s Save Flying Time On Miami-Buenos Aires Run Scheduled commercial flying time between Miami and Buenos Aires was shaved by more than 8% hours when Pan American Grace Airways inaugurated a through flight service with Douglas DC-6 aircraft last month. The new service brings the Argentine capitol within 20 hours scheduled flying time from Miami. Strike and Spare Fever Has Invaded Honolulu Maintenance Men Are Holding Their Own But Want More Help The bowling fever has now hit a small corp of Honolulu PAA-ers, as it has in Seattle and San Francisco. Island PAA-ers are bowling in two leagues—the 800 and the 875 at the Waikiki Bowling Lanes — every Tuesday and Thursday evening. However, the maintenance department in Alohaland seems to be monopolizing the league play. The team captain, Jim Thornton, says that there must be personnel in other departments who might be interested. Come Bowl Any Wednesday Dunne Terry, president of the San Francisco PAA bowling league, announces that 14 teams are continuing to roll each Wednesday night from 6 to 8:15 p. m. If anyone based in San Francisco wishes to bowl, drop around to the Burlingame Bowl any Wednesday and a place will be found for you. Everyone who would like to bowl is invited to sign-up, and the wa-hines (girls) are not to be excluded. Bowling is a sport in which ages 16 to 70 can compete, so if you are at all interested, Honolulu PAA-ers, contact Jim Thornton. He reports that just as in San Francisco and in Seattle, the leagues are sponsored by the American Bowling Congress and all members bowling in the ABC League are rated and listed in the Blue Book. Thornton modestly adds that the boys are holding their own but are aiming to do better. They have six weeks to go in the 875 league but the 800 league is just starting. The time is ripe to bolster the 800 league. Arrangements can be made to enter more teams if the entrants are available. Says Jim, “Kanes and wahines, do not wait for someone to push' you, show your fight and step into the ring.” Taking an active part in the bowling league in addition to team captain Thornton are: Mike Nicko, Phil Chase, Rudie Tolis, Stan Collins, Frank Montayre, Jim Hobbs. Bob Pex and King Chin. GIVE PLEASE The Community Chest drive starts today. All Pan American personnel, will be contacted this week by a representative from your department.
