Monthly Operational Bulletin To: All Pan Am Flight Attendants From: In-Flight Service Headquarters - MIA VOLUME XVI, Issue 11 October 1986 Dear Fellow Employees: Earlier this month, the Pan Am Shuttle joined the fight for passengers in the lucrative northeastern U.S. air corridor between New York and Washington and New York and Boston. Flight Attendants from our New York and Miami bases crewed these flights during the first month of operation although, beginning in November, only New York based Flight Attendants are patterned for the Shuttle. The Shuttle business requires Pan Am to provide a kind of service new to the airline.... a demand schedule. Operating with B727 and A300 aircraft, Shuttle flights are advertised every hour on the half-hour from 0630 to 2030 in each direction, with a guaranteed seat. That means the Company has committed to “roll out” additional aircraft as necessary in order to guarantee a seat to any passenger who has shown up in time for a scheduled departure. This type of operation is designed to compete directly with the kind of schedule offered by Eastern Airlines the incumbent competitor in the market for the last 25 years. Pan Am’s service to Shuttle passengers was designed with a number of important differences to that traditionally offered by Eastern. Pan Am passengers purchase their tickets from automated ticketing machines in the terminal, rather than onboard the aircraft as is the case with Eastern passengers. Our passengers also enjoy a snack and beverage on every flight, with complimentary wine and beer offered all passengers. Eastern has started serving a snack to passengers in response to our initial announcement of plans for this service. Pan Am flights depart from LaGuardia’s Marine Air Terminal which is accessible with less road congestion and which is closer to the city. The Company is nearing completion on a four gate Shuttle terminal, built as an appendage to the historic Marine Air Terminal (from which Pan Am’s flying boats used to depart). The most distinct difference that Shuttle passengers enjoy is our reputation for excellent in-flight service. Comments received from passengers after only the first few days of operation have been highly complimentary about our operation and about the in-flight service provided. The Pan Am Shuttle promises, over the long term, to make a solid and essential contribution to overall corporate revenue. Your continued efforts toward making Pan Am the shuttle travelers airline of choice to/from New York will go a long way towards returning Pan Am to profitability and are very much appreciated. J. Robert Juliano
