Monthly Operational Bulletin To: All Pan Am Flight Attendants From: In-Flight Service Headquarters - MIA r CORPORATE LIBRARY VOLUME XVII, IssNflMI 1 1987 April 1987 PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS Dear Fellow Employees: The appearance and conduct of any customer-contact employee group are major factors in the public’s perception of a company, particularly in a service industry. When we go into a department store, rent a car, check in at a hotel, or fly on another airline, we are left with an impression of the employees and of their company. In the airline industry, we in Flight Service are the employees who are in the public eye more than anyone else; our appearance and conduct leave a distinct impression on the traveling public. Whether we have worked for Pan Am for one year or 31 years, whether we are male or female, our personal appearance leaves an impression with our passengers. If we look neat and well groomed while we exhibit courtesy and helpfulness towards our customers, we earn and merit the respect we all desire. We have not placed enough emphasis on appearance and image in the past few years, and our passengers have written numerous letters expressing their disappointment. As a result of this feedback, we will start a program in May to bring all Flight Attendants to a level of grooming and appearance of which we will all be proud. Updated uniform and appearance guidelines will be distributed in May to each of the more than 4,000 employees in the Flight Service Department. The management staff at each base will be briefed on the guidelines in order to respond to your questions and provide guidance to you. Take the time now to focus individually on your appearance. If you believe you need to: order a replacement uniform, evaluate your hairstyle, buy new shoes, go on an exercise and weight loss program. Do whatever it is you need to do to ensure that your appearance is excellent — not just once in a while but each and every time you go to work. There is nothing more impressive than a well-groomed, professional crew walking through a terminal, boarding passengers, working a flight, or checking into a layover hotel. A well-groomed appearance benefits us all: we feel good about ourselves; our fellow employees feel good about us; and our passengers are impressed. J. Robert Juliano
