Monthly Operational Bulletin To: All Pan Am Flight Attendants From: In-Flight Service Headquarters - MIA volume xviii, issuQQRFORATE LIBRARY April/May 1988 MAY 1 2 1986 Dear Colleague: pftN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS Since I last wrote to you, I have had the opportunity to continue traveling around the system and it is quite clear that there is a lot of work to be done in the months ahead. I sincerely appreciate all the notes which I have received expressing support and offering valuable suggestions. Your input is important to me as we attempt to define our future course, and has helped me to better understand the problems at hand. Thank you indeed! As I indicated at the various Base Meetings, a complete analysis of the Flight Service organization was conducted and a new structure will be implemented effective May 1. The objective of the new organization is to streamline administrative work processes, provide greater support for front-line employees, enhance the relationship between Flight Attendants and Supervisors, reduce costs where appropriate by assigning broader responsibilities to lower levels in the organization and to establish performance accountability for each function. The list of specific changes is complex and lengthy. Here are some of the highlights: • 11 mid-management and 5 first-level functions have been phased out. • Four Regional Base Directors will coordinate activities for LAX/SFO, JFK/LGA, MIA/IAD and LHR/Regional Bases. • Administrative support for Regional Flight Attendants has been transferred from Miami Headquarters to London Flight Service. • The use of permanent “special assignment” Flight Attendants for year round administrative tasks will be discontinued. These activities will be performed by clerical and/or management employees as appropriate. “Special assignment” Flight Attendants will be used only on a short-term basis for recruitment and training and/or to provide technical guidance for special projects as needed. • Supervisor to Flight Attendant ratios are established at 1:75 in the Purser category and 1:125 in the Steward/ess category. All Flight Attendants will have a “personal” Supervisor with whom to conduct all aspects of business. The concept of specialized supervisors to handle disciplinary matters, for example, will be discontinued. • Flight Service Headquarters and Crew Scheduling functions will be coordinated by a single individual who will report directly to me. I realize many of you will question how all this affects what you see and do each and every day. In response, I can honestly say that an effective structure where management is held accountable for performance, and goals and objectives are clearly defined, is the lynch-pin necessary to succeed; internal self-discipline and hard work will result in a better Corporate culture. On another front, we are making progress in achieving our new-hire recruitment goals. No doubt, we have an enormous challenge ahead of us in every respect. It will take all of us working together to achieve our mutual goals. Regards, H. E. Adler
