New products expected to boost Duty Free sales Pan Am’s year-to-date in-flight Duty Free sales are up 3.1 percent over 1990 figures! Beginning July 1, in conjunction with In-Flight Duty Free Shop, Inc., new products are being inaugurated systemwide on those flights scheduled for Duty Free sales. Also on July 1, an all new Duty Free video debuts on board aimed at the gift-giving traveler. The opportunity to shop dutyfree on Pan Am flights is increasing as summer flight sectors are added. Plus, Duty Free sales have been reinstated on 18 weekly round-trip 727 intra-European services originating from the FRA hub. Highlights of the new merchandise includes an increase in children’s gift products, such as the popular Pan Am logo “Jumbo Jet Airplane” watch, hand-held computer games and Highflyer kites. Other new merchandise includes Misaki faux pearl jewelry, Monet bracelets and necklaces, Attwood and Sawyer brooches and watches, and Hermes silk ties. Lancome’s newest women’s fragrance, Tresor Eau de Parfum, is replacing Oscar De La Renta, Chloe, and L’Air Du Temps. Of interest to the scotch drinkers, Glenfiddich is replacing Glenlivet. In all, twenty-one new products are being introduced this summer with a corresponding number of products leaving the Duty Free inventory. Detailed information is available in Summer Stock, the Duty Free “program” distributed to all Flight Attendants in mid June. Don’t forget to enter the “People’s Poll” contest for a chance to win a fabulous Duty Free gift. Deposit your ballot (found on the last page of Summer Stock) in the CBC by July 15. Cost saving suggestions prompt changes The February/March Cost Savings and Waste Reduction Surveys that you filled out produced wonderful results. Below are some of the changes your input initiated: • Olives were eliminated in all bar kits except First Class. • PSKs are only replaced at a few stations. On a station-by-station basis, caterers top off the PSKs, or if no additional charge is incurred, replace the kit. • First Class butter was reduced on all long-haul flights. • The primary cause of excessive quantities of plastic and styrofoam cups on board was due to the caterers not removing them from inbound flights, just restocking for the next flight. Provisioning amounts were reevaluated. Your continued feedback on current cups/glasses provisioning is requested. • Hot towels are now laundered and reused. Remember to return them to your linen bag. • Stir sticks are now packed 50 per package. If excesses are still reported, quantities will be re-evaluated and reduced. • Peanuts were deleted from all late night flights and breakfast flights. • Consistently unpopular food items were phased out with new menus. On all domestic flights, and many long-haul flights, the ratio of beef to other entrees was reduced. • Soda can recycling programs have been expanded to include LAX and MIA. • Liquor provisioning for all flights is presently being evaluated to implement reductions. • Extra transportation expenses have been reduced by combining cockpit and Flight Service pick-up times.
