Span. •.. . ..-.A ...... ....... .... ......... 230 ft. : Height..... .L----............................ • 57 ft. • - . r Harry Woodhead, Pi'esident of Consolidated Vultee' Aircraft Corporation,'revealed last week.that a fleet.of these giant 204-passenger land based Clippers, vastly exceeding thfe size of any transport.aircraft yet proposed, will be built for Pan American Airways. The airplane is twelve times the size of present, standard‘twin engined commercial aircraft in the United States. Because airplanes of such great size and. speed require heavy traffic volume to realize, maximum economy,( Pan American plans to utilise them only on its long.distance, high traffic density routes where the severest foreign-flat competition will be met.* •Three of the new 204-passenger clippers at but 50 per cent capacity would carry 150,106 passengers between Honolulu and California. This is more than .three' times the largest number carried by sea and air combined in any year before Pearl Harbor. With' their high Cruising speed, three of the new" type clippers would, provide daily service in both directions between San Francisco and Honolulu as, well as Los Angeles and Honolulu. Interesting facts■concerning this new.clipper (Consolidated Vultecfs Mpdel 37): (l) The wing tips may be flexed about six feet in a gust or during certain maneuvers. (2)’ The portion of the fuselage ahead of the wing is 2‘feet longer than a Catalina and only 2 feet shorter than a B-24. (3) Two'B-24 airplanes side* by side with 10:* between wing tips, equals the span of the Model 37.
