The Dutch are, of necessity, seafaring. Shipbuilding is important — one of every ten ocean-going ships of the world was built in Holland. Fishing villages, as members of the Hanseatic League, early grew to importance trading along the Baltic and North Seas. As commerce expanded, half the world’s shipping became Dutch and ships from Rotterdam and Amsterdam sailed to Russia, Turkey, China, the Indies and America. Before the war, The Netherlands ranked fifth in world trade. The Netherlands even gave England a king — William III — of the House of Orange. Tourist attractions are manifold. Rotterdam, Continental Europe’s largest transit port, was the first place from which the Pilgrims sailed in 1620. Amsterdam, capital and financial hub (Holland was the eighth prewar commercial power in the world), is a diamond center, with Rembrandt’s home, the Royal Palace, and elm-bordered canals. Volen-dam is the place to see fishermen in wooden shoes and voluminous pantaloons unload their catch. At Alkmaar you can see white-uniformed carriers in broad-brimmed hats carrying fresh round cheeses on wooden bar- rows, while brightly- Starting out on a day of thrills colored tulips bloom in near St. Moritz many a field. Switzerland, the hub of Europe, is dominated by the lofty Alps. They cover three-fifths of the 15,700 square miles, many with peaks over 10,000 feet high. Glaciers, steep slopes (ideal for winter sports) and sun-bathed valleys dotted with Alpine flowers characterize the land. The idea and practice of liberty, in all its forms, are reasons Switzerland has been able to assimilate three regions with four languages: French, Romansh, German and Italian. Basis of Swiss democracy are the self-governing communes. HoME OF RED CROSS • Napoleon in 1803, declared "Nature destined Switzerland to become a League of states; no wise man would attempt to conquer it.” The legendary William Tell represents resistance to outside rule. For 100 years the Swiss have had compulsory military service but have not fought a war in that time. Instead, during World War II, Switzerland continued to serve as the home of the International Red Cross, filling the role of intermediary. The 4,000,000 Swiss import certain necessities (there is hydro-electric power but a lack of coal and oil) in exchange for exports of heavy machinery, fine watches, linen, laces, silks, woodwork, toys, embroideries and cheeses. The rise of industrial cities accounts in part for the quadrupling of the population in 100 years.
