travelling with Welcome to Pan Ain's World! We believe that travelling with an infant or small child is easier if you know what to expect during the flight and howto prepare for the flight. We hope the information and suggestions in this brochure will help to make your flight with us an enjoyable one. Plan Ahead children... You and your child will both enjoy the flight more if you are rested and relaxed when you begin your trip. Plan to finish your packing and preparations the day before you fly. Allow yourself plenty of time before departure to get to the airport, check in, and clear any necessary government formalities. Dress for Comfort You will find that layers of clothing which can be added or removed as the cabin temperature fluctuates will be most comfortable for both you and your child. Clothing should be loose—it is perfectly normal for stomachs to swell slightly during flight. Limit \bur Carry-on Baggage to what You Will Need During Flight Your trip will be easier if you keep carry-on baggage to a minimum—especially if you are travelling with more than one small child. United States Government regulations require that your carry-on bag fit underneath the seat in front of you. The size of your bag should not exceed 21" x 14" x 8" (or, 53x35x20 cm.). We suggest you choose a lightweight bag with an adjustable shoulder strap which will leave your hands free for tickets, documents and taking care of your child. If you decide to travel with a collapsible stroller, you will be able to hang the bag over the handles of the stroller on your way to and from the aircraft. What You Will Find on the Aircraft • Portable bassinets for babies up to 23" (58 cm) in length. • Milk and juice (orange, apple and tomato). • Soft drinks. • A small emergency supply of disposable diapers (Pampers daytime weight for babies 11-16 lbs or 5-7.3 kg.). • Diaper changing tables in the lavatories on the left side of the aircraft (747SP only). SomeThings You Will Want to Bring with You In-Flight • A change or two of clothing for your child in case of spills. (If you are travelling with an infant you may want to bring a smock to protect your own clothes.) • A plastic bag to hold wet or soiled clothing. • Toys: Bring a selection of small toys, books and games to keep your child amused during the trip. Try to include a favorite toy and at least one or two new toys or books. It is best to choose toys that don’t have a lot of parts which are easily lost. • Snacks: Fruit, dried fruit, nuts, cookies, crackers, or hard candies are some of the things you might bring for children to nibble on between meal services or while waiting in the departure lounge. Avoid excessively rich or messy sweets. • Medication: Always carry any prescriptions or vitamins your child requires in your carry-on bag. There is no medication or children’s aspirin on the airplane. If you are travelling with a child under 2 years old ... • Disposable diapers: Approximately one for every two hours of travel plus a few extras—more if you usually change your baby more frequently. • Baby bottles: 1 or 2 for milk, and 1 for juice or water. • Formula: If you feed your baby formula in preference to milk you should bring the formula with you. A can of powdered formula is convenient to carry. If possible, avoid formulas which must be mixed in advance and refrigerated. • Baby food: You may either bring baby food with you, or order a Baby Meal at no additional charge. The Baby Meal consists of strained meat, vegetables and dessert. To order a Baby Meal, contact your travel agent or Pan Am reservations agent at least 24 hours before your flight. • Miscellaneous: Disposable baby wipes, powder, oil or lotion in small travel containers will help you keep your child clean and comfortable. You may wish to include a soothing lip coating to protect against the dry atmosphere of the aircraft. Special Meals for Children meals which must be ordered in advance. Upon request, these will be supplied instead oil the regular entree choice. To order a special children’s meal, contact your travel agent or your Pan Am reservations agent at least 24 hours before departure. The children’s meals we offer are: On most flights where lunch or dinner is served we offer a choice of two or three entrees. We also have available special children’s • A hamburger on bun with chocolate ice cream and vanilla milk shake. • A beef frankfurter on bun with vanilla ice cream and chocolate milk shake. • A peanut butter sandwich, vanilla ice cream and chocolate milk shake • * Note: On flights from Tokyo, apple juice replaces the milk shake and orange sherbet the ice cream. If your child requires a special diet for religious or medical reasons, contact a Pan Am representative at least 24 hours before your flight for a more complete list of the special meals we have available. Flight Attendants AreThere to Help You We recommend that infants and small children never be left unattended during flight, so feel free to ask a flight attendant to watch your baby for you for a few minutes while you stretch your legs or go to the lavatory. Please remember that other duties will prevent a flight attendant from staying with your child for an extended period of time. Flight attendants will also be happy to warm bottles and baby food for you. Your flight attendants are a good source of information. If you need anything, or have any questions about the airplane, its facilities, or your destination, don’t hesitate to ask any one of the flight attendants. How\fc>u Can Help Your Flight Attendants Find out when the meals will be served so that you can have bottles or baby food heated before or after the main meal services rather than during them. Please keep children out of the aisles and galley areas during meal services to prevent accidents. We ask that you comply with all cabin safety rules and regulations. AWord About Safety For take-off and landing, the correct way to hold a child under two years old is to first fasten your seat belt snug-gly around your hips, and then hold your baby in front of you on your lap. Your arms are your baby’s safety belt. When the FASTEN SEAT BELT sign is turned on during the flight, you should fasten your seat belt and hold your baby as you did for take-off. If your infant is sleeping in a
