Pan American World Airways LATIN AMERICAN DIVISION APRIL 1954 36 540419 (See Pages 3, 4, 5 for Speeches) LAD did a good job last year, “but we’ll nave to do even better this year to close the gap between that we are doing and what we should be doing,” Division Manager Edwin Drescher declared in a comprehensive report on the State of LAD at the April meeting of the PAA Management Club in Miami. Summing up LAD’s position at the pi’esent time, Dtescher told the 400 Management Club members present at the Bayfront Park Auditorium: “You might say we got hack on the right track with a lot of ‘extra effort’ all down the line last year. It would he a shame if we ran out of gas now.” The full report on the State of LAD was presented in three parts, and illustrated by numerous performance charts projected in color on a moving picture screen. Drescher confined his comments & largely to the division’s financial position. Operational plans for 1954 were discussed by Judge Barnette, assistant to the operations manager, speaking for Capt. Oliver J. Studeman. Passenger and cargo plans— and “what we’re doing besides talking about Superlative Service”—were outlined by Division Traffic and Sales Manager Mario Martinez. * Drescher opened the report by praising Executive Vice President (Continued on Page 6) NEW ROUTES, SERVICE EXTENSIONS SOUGHT LAD plans for new routes and service extensions during 1954 were listed by Division Traffic and Sales Manager Mario Martinez during his talk before the PAA Management Club in Miami. “We have applied to the CAB for a new route from New York to Mexico City, with Washington as a co-terminal,” Martinez said. “We have requested renewal of our Los Angeles certificate with extension to include San Francisco as co-terminal. And we are seeking approval of interchange agreements to provide through service between Mexico City and Chicago, and Panama and New York.” He added that before the year is out, PAA would apply for still more new routes and service extension in LAD. Principal speaker at the daylong event was Lt. Gen. Ira C. Eaker, U. S. Air Force, retired, who 25 years ago made the first Brownsville-Panama dawn to dusk flight. The general praised PAA and Brownsville for their 25 years of international aviation pioneering and their aeronautical progress. Brownsville’s Mayor Herbert L. Stokely presented PAA a scroll of Meritorious Service during the formal ceremonies. The scroll read: “Whereas P a n American World Airways was the first airiine to inaugurate airmail and passenger service to Brownsville, Texas, March 8, 1929; and “Whereas Pan American Airways pioneered the first aerial link between the Great State of Texas, Mexico and Central America and thus has made a substantial contribution to the trade, travel and goodwill existing between these areas for the past quarter-century; and # “Whereas Pan American World Airways continuously has served the city of Brownsville and the State of Texas for 25 years and has been the largest employer with the largest payroll in Brownsville for the last 25 years; “Therefore, the City of Brownsville, in honor and appreciation of this great international airline’s contribution to our city’s growth and economy, herewith presents This Scroll of Meritorious Service to Pan American World Airways this 11th Day of April, 1954.” Edwin Drescher, LAD manager, received the scroll. LAD’ers On Ton liv Big Edge That means the LAD’ers in as Tip Top Contest Ends The six-month^-long Tip Top sales contest; which made salesmen out of non-sales people at PAA’s gateway stations, ended March 31, with LAD sweeping honors in a running prize-point battle with the System offices and the two other divisions. The point tally at the March 31 deadline showed LAD on top with 770,378 points (with more points to come). System was second with 584,-344; Atlantic -Division third with 562,335; and Pacific-Alaska fourth with 531,055. Miami, New Orleans, Houston and Brownsville will reap more than 800,000 points wrorth of Tip Top merchandise prizes. The final total will be higher than the March 31 total, due to the fact that the General Accounting Office in New York will continue to process late contest sales and mail out point checks until mid-April, Sales personnel, however, ceased accepting “Clipper courtesy cards” on March 31—the date the contest officially ended. As the contest ended, a communique from the System office in New York to LAD Contest Chairman James E. Henry, declared: “LAD has done a fine job.” To this, Division Traffic and Sales Manager Mario Martinez added additional words of praise for LAD’s treasure-diggers. “We’re over the top in Tip Top,” Martinez said. “All employes in every department are to be congratulated for being part of the sales team that brought more than 800,000 points to LAD and more than $4,000 in prizes into the homes of personnel. “The most important phase of the contest, however, -was not the prizes themselves, but the proof once again that every employe can be a salesman for our company. “Contest or no contest, I sincerely hope that each one of you will continue to be a ‘tip top’ salesman for the world’s (Continued on Page 9)
