More than 15,000 persons visited the 75-passenger double-decker during its two-day stay and some more fortunate went aloft on its four courtesy flights. CAB Officials Commend MOB PAA’s Miami Overhaul Base has received commendation from the highest possible source following an official inspection by a group of Civil Aeronautics Board officials. “It is the greatest enterprise of its kind in the world,” said Oswald Ryan, CAB vice chairman. He and six other CAB department heads flew to Miami from Washington aboard the new Boeing-type Clipper in the record time of two hours, 40 minutes. “PAA’s Overhaul Base is very important to the entire industry as a yardstick of costs and efficiency,” Ryan told reporters. “It is a mammoth effort.” Safety is always of vital interest to the CAB and in that respect MOB also won praise. “Its shops and laboratories tries to double-check the reports and tests of air equipment manufacturers,” Ryan said. “PAA doesn’t accept the manufacturers’ findings, but makes its own tests. If any piece of equipment shows bugs, PAA puts it through detailed, independent checks. “Safety is a 24-hour, year-round job.” Accompanying Ryan on the inspection were William Cusick, CAB examiner; Walter H. Hord, accounting and rates division chief; William Burt, rate section chief; Frank H. Crozier, analysis division chief; William K. Andrews, safety investigation bureau director, and Edward E. Slattery, Jr., information section chief. Bennett Griffin, administrator of Washington’s National Airport, also made the trip.
