EXEC PROMOTI HENRY BERNE; HENRY BERKE The elections of Henry Berke and Ev Goulard to the posts of Vice President in charge of Services of Supply and Assistant Vice President—Industrial Relations, respectively, were announced this month. Mr. Berke has been with Pan American since 1942 when he joined the company to take charge of distribution of equipment and material to 70 airport construction projects around the world built by Pan American in connection with the war effort. He has been Assistant Vice President—Services of Supply since 1945. Mr. Berke, who was born in Norway, started his transportation career with the original United States Lines. Before joining Pan American, he was president of Norton and Ellis of New York Inc., general shipping agents, and prior to that—traffic manager of the American Merchant Lines. Mr. Berke in his younger days was quite a ski enthusiast and he plays a good game of golf. More recently, he has spent most of his free time on his cruiser, “Sea Clipper,” sailing around the waters of the Long Island Sound. When he’s not doing that, he’s puttering around in his workshop at home. He recently completed a job of paneling his living room in Philippine Mahogany and is a wood craftsman of no little ability. He lives with his wife in Pelham Manor. They have four children and two grandchildren. One son, Harold, is expected home from Korea momentarily. Harold is a graduate of V.M.I. and received a field promotion to 1st Lieutenant while in combat. Mr. Berke is a member of the Foreign Commerce Club, Pelham Country Club, the Huguenot Yacht Club and was recently elected to a two-year term on the council of the Wings Club. DNS GO TO EV GOULARD Mr. Goulard joined Pan American in 1948 and has been a member of the industrial relations department since then. A graduate of Cornell University, he received his law degree from Harvard in 1937 and has been in industrial relations work ever since. During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1946. Until recently, Ev was a resident of Westfield, New Jersey hut is now a “country squire,” having acquired a home in Darien, Connecticut, where he lives with his wife and two children. His spare time is taken up with mowing, spading and scything, getting hi.s property in shape so that he has little time anymore to play tennis. Ev wields a mean racket and has the distinction of being System General Office Tennis Champion by virtue of his victory over Bob Lord in the last Tennis Tournament held in 1951. (Photo by Vincent James) EV GOULARD George's Wedding Attended By Most George Eckert, GAO-Cargo Revenue, can lay claim to the largest number of guests to attend a wedding of a System General Office employee. George was married last month on a nation-wide TV program, “Bride and Groom.” George was scheduled to marry Joan Kalt, former Mineola Roller Skating Queen, locally on the 12th but the chance to marry on TV came along a week sooner so, George and Joan rearranged their schedule. In addition to many beautiful gifts, the happy couple flew via PAA to Bermuda and stayed one week at the Princess Hotel. Sharpen Wits for Suggestion Week All employees of the System General Offices are urged to sharpen their wits and get the wheels turning with Ideas . . . Ideas . . . Ideas. The reason? Suggestion Coordinator Mary Lyons has announced that Monday, July 19, through Friday, July 23, will be officially known, throughout the System General Offices, as SYSTEM SUGGESTION WEEK. A special merchandise prize will be awarded to the person submitting the suggestion during that week which, if adopted, will yield the greatest all-around savings. Plans are underway for special suggestion forms to be placed in the Suggestion Boxes from July 19 through July 23. “Naturally,” Mary stated, “the more suggestions an individual submits, the more of a chance he has of winning.” Results of suggestions submitted during Suggestion Week will not be known immediately, since they will still have to go through the normal procedure of investigation and evaluation by the department affected and by the committee. Employees are encouraged to make an extra effort during this period because they stand a chance of walking off with a merchandise prize in addition to an ever-useful CASH AWARD! PAA SERVICE 'SOCKO' According to Abel Green, editor of Variety, aviation is doing a better tourism job for Europe than the official bureaus, and they treat John Q. Public as VIP’s. Writing in his June 23 column, Green goes on to praise PAA in particular: “The hostesses and stewards of Pan American,” he said, “could give some of the chichi eateries and niteries plenty of pointers on the art of catering to the public. They now pipe Strauss waltzes, Porter, Berlin, Kern and Gershwin through the p. a. system in transit, before, during and after aperitifs, dinner, etc. The flying officers utilize the p. a. system generously—at least this was the experience on the Pan American clipper—to give statistics, weather reports, things to see to the right or left, in the way of cities, coastline and kindred information.” He also praised the “extraordinary” Maxim’s-catered food. “Maggie and Louis Vaudable, who own the world-famous Maxim’s, now serve 1,000 meals a week to Pan Am planes flying the transatlantic and to the Middle and Far East. The Vaudables are merchandising this VIP appeal to vox pop with their own brands of vintages and products—a real showmanship job and an important sideline grosser for the fancy groceries.” Who's Joining Ann? We all know that Ann Vitiello, GAO-Disbursements, won the beauty contest at last year’s Skyline Club picnic but, who will win this year? The best way to find out is to make your reservations for the picnic now. It’s going to be the same place, Green Valley Park, Newfoundland, New Jersey, Saturday, July 24, 1954 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (busses leave LIC building at 9 AM). Tickets may be obtained from floor representatives listed below at $1 each for club members and one guest; $1.50 for non-members. All children will be admitted free. Floor reps are: Jean Caria and Dolores Meier, 2nd floor; Maureen Lynch, 3rd floor; Mary Betzler and Rocco Graziano, 4th floor; John De Fiore, Anne Roughley and Jayne Donnison, 5th floor; Seena Winick Margot Von Schoaf and Doreen Reid, 6th floor; Loretta Schneider Jean Karch, Joan Tierney and Grace Lamb, 7th floor, Mary Carroll, 8th floor; Virginia Crog-han, 9th floor and Ann Malloy, Chys-ler Building. In addition to the beauty contest, there’ll he plenty of games, eats, beer, swimming and dancing for men, women and children. Incidentally, the three men in the picture above are John Termeer, Jack Beach and “Uncle Paul” Stickney, who have consented to act as judges again. (Ed. Note: Try to keep them away.) CORRECTION Last month, The Clipper reported that sons of two Pan Am employees were recipients of the Howard B. Dean Memorial Scholarship to Yale University. The story stated that Roger Rulewich, son of GAO’s George Rule-wich, and Stephen E. Ralph, son of London-based pilot Fred E. Ralph, AD, were the' winners. We regret to say that this was an error. Only one — Roger Rulewich — received the scholarship.
