Hallowe’en Dance November 3rd On Saturday, November 3, on entering the Clipper Club, you’ll probably think you’re in another world — a world of fleeting shadows, formless figures, weird cries, and heaven knows what — for the Hallowe’en season is upon us and we just have to celebrate it. You don’t have to wear a costume, hut it will he more fun if you do — and if your garb is pretty original — who knows, you may win one of the three prizes' offered for unique dress. The first prize is the grand sum of $5, the second $3, and the third $2. These will he presented about 10:30, so he sure to he available at that hour. A special guest at the party will he Miss Margaret Maclntire who is leaving her post as Senior Nurse in the Medical Office of Pan American. Everyone — and we’re sure it will he everyone — will want to hid her a fond farewell and good luck for the future. The tariff for the party is the same as usual . . . 60c each for a Clipper Club member and guest, and $1.50 each for non-members. The tickets are on sale already, so buy yours now and get ready to shake hands with a few ghosts. AD CITED BY BIXBY FOR BEST AIRCRAFT UTILIZATION The Atlantic Division recently received high commendation from Vice President Harold M. Bixby for having topped all other divisions, subsidiaries and affiliates in aircraft utilization on all types of equipment for the system. The division achieved an aircraft utilization of 9 hours and 55 minutes for the month of August. Foremen’s Group Attend Meeting M embers of the Atlantic Division Supervisors Forum recently attended the October meeting of the Queens County Foremen’s din 1), held at the Queensboro Chamber of Commerce. High spot of the evening was an excellent address by Professor Erwin H. Schell, head of the Department of Business and Engineering Administration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. PA Aers who attended the meeting were: A1 Thomas, George Updike, Henry Breit-meyer, Gilbert Tyler, Bill Ryder, ‘Pop’ Moore, Jack Potter, Carl Doyle, John Ward, Howard Mitchell, A1 Elehash, Charlie Tilton, Gus Wunder. Assistant Division Manager E. W. MeVitty attended the meeting as a guest. Leslie Elected V. P. - Atlantic. Cummings Named As New Div. Mgr. Staff changes in top positions in the Atlantic Division were recently announced by President Juan Trippe. John C. Leslie, Division Manager since 1941, was elected Vice-President, Atlantic Division. Replacing him as Division Manager is Robert L. Cummings, who was Manager of the Airport Development Program. Paul M. Strieffler, from the staff of Vice President Bixby, was appointed Administrative Assistant to the Manager, a newly created post. Mr. Leslie is a pioneer in overseas flying and. a veteran of nearly 17 years with PAA. He joined PAA in 1929, only two years after it established scheduled operations i ,m *l)e 90-mile route between Key West. Florida, and Havana ■VTI as the nation’s first overseas airline. For the first six years of his career he served in various engineering posts in the company’s operations throughout Latin America. In 1935 he moved to the Pacific operation as Division Engineer to help run PAA’s operations to Australia and the Orient. In 1938 Leslie became Operations Manager at Alameda, California, and later moved to San Francisco as Operations Manager of the Pacific Division. He came to NBA on January 15, 1941 as Division Manager of the Atlantic Division. As Atlantic Division Manager Leslie was technical advisor in charge of the historic flight of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Africa for the Casablanca Conference. During the past year and a half he served as Chairman of the airlines committee which worked out arrangements for space and leasing at New York’s new $200,000,000 airport at Idle-wild, Queens. He also served as a company representative at the International Air Transport Association meetings, at Havana last April and the session just closed at Montreal. Mr. Leslie was graduated from Princton in 1926 and received his Bachelor of Science and M. S. in business and engineering administration at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Robert Lincoln Cummings, Jr., new Division Manager, has been with the company for nearly five years, spending most of that time directing the Airport Development Program. This is our wartime airport building program which employed 5,000 American personnel in the building of 50 airports in 16 foreign countries from 1941 until May of this year. Cummings for three years represented Vice President and Assistant to the President Samuel F. Pryor as Manager of the ADP program, heading up the operation from Miami. As part of his duties he traveled extensively over all the Atlantic routes as well as throughout South America. The new Manager came with this company on Jan. 1, 1941, as Assistant to Vice President Cooper. After a year in this post he became assistant to the late Vice President George Grovenor and upon his death, assistant to President Juan T. Trippe on the ADP program. When this program was taken over by V. P. Pryor, Cummings continued as Manager of the $120,000,000 building job. Cummings received his schooling in his home town, at Milton Academy, and went on to Harvard, from which he was graduated in 1935. He spent three years following that at Harvard Law School. Married in 1940 to the former Dorcas Oakley Ferris, he is the father of two small girls, Dorcas, age 4 and Lila, 1 year old. Paul M. Strieffler, Administrative Assistant to the Manager, fills a business management position new to the Division — emphasizing the importance of dollars and cents operation during the postwar period. He has been with the company for nearly 1 Vi» years in the office of Vice President Bixby, working chiefly on Navy contract matters. Strieffler did a two-year hitch in the Navy before coming with Pan American, serving in Washington with the Office of Strategic Services. Previous to that he had been from 1933 to 1942 a partner in Riter & Co., New York investment hankers, and a member of the hanking firm of Dillon Read & Co. from 1916 to 1933.
