PAN AMERICAN ATLANTIC DIVISION L/PPFff Volume 7 April, 1949 Number 4 Miss Margaret Truman waves a smiling greeting from the cockpit of the plane she sponsored. East and Mid-West View Stratocruiser; Capt. Brotk Heads Division; VP Smith Resigns from PAA An executive system memorandum from Mr. Trippe on March 1 announced with regret that James H. Smith, Jr., had resigned as Vice President — Atlantic Division, leaving Captain Horace Brock, Division manager, in charge of the Division. Concerning Mr. Smith’s resignation, Captain Brock said: “I know I speak for the entire personnel of the Atlantic Division when I say that we deeply regret Jim Smith’s decision to leave the field of air transportation for other activities. His work here has left a deep impression on the Division — we will all miss him. Our best wishes for happiness and success accompany him on his new mission.” Captain Brock, a graduate of Yale University and the Harvard Law School, won his wings at the Army Air Corps Training Center at Kelly Field, Texas, in 1934. After a year of active duty with the AAF at Lan gley Field,he joined Pan American at Miami as an apprentice pilot on January 1, 1936. Capt. Brock Trained in Miami As part of his PAA training program, Captain Brock spent six months in the han-kgars, the overhaul shop and the engine shop. Moving to the Pacific Division he was co-pilot and navigation officer for two years. In 1939 he was transferred to the Atlantic Division as co-pilot and with this Division he became master pilot in 1942. He was a member of the crew of the Yankee Clipper during her survey flight and on the mail (Continued on page 6) Record Crowds Tour Giant New Clipper Compiled by The Clipper s Staff of roving correspondents The largest . . . the fastest . . . the newest . . . the most luxurious . . . the most looked at — nothing short of a superlative is being used to describe the Stratocruiser Clippers which have v-ow joined the Connies and the DC-4’s that make up Pan American s globe-circling fleet of aircraft. Clipper America, Clipper Flying Cloud, Clipper Rainbow and Clipper Trade Wind have already been added to the PAA roster. Coming soon from the Boeing assembly line will be the Clipper Golden Eagle, Clipper Golden Gate, Clipper Seven Seas — in all, 20 super-airliners to fly Pan American passengers and cargo swiftly and luxuriously to the ends of the earth. Reg Cooper Seeks BDA Tennis Title (Marion H. Babcock, Clipper reporter from Bermuda, turns her hand to sports writing. ) Hamilton, Bermuda Pan American’s Bermuda staff are watching Reggie Cooper, traffic representative, with close interest these days. Reggie is knocking himself out trying to win the title of Bermuda Tennis Champion, and we’re all behind him, 100 per cent. In the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club championships, Reggie played against Bill Ford of Yale and in 2% hours beat Ford, 6-8, 6-3, 8-6, but lost to Dick Friesenbruch, a tennis champ, in the semi-finals. In 1939, Reggie was Bermuda’s junior singles and doubles champion, and in 1941 ranked No. 12 in the U. S. National Interscholastic rankings, when he represented St. Albans School, Washington, D. C. Reggie is competing against visiting American players, March 28 to April 4, and his play is being watched keenly by all of us. The “word” on these new Clippers began to be heard in Washington, D.C., on March 5 where the Clipper America, Captain Scott Flower commanding, rolled into National Airport 6 hours, 22 minutes after taking off from San Francisco. Flying non-stop, the giant double-decker made the 2,473-mile trip at an average speed of 388 miles to set a new record for that run. Miss Truman Wields Champagne Miss Margaret Truman, daughter of the President of the United States, christened the Clipper America in impressive ceremonies inside Washington’s hangar. Vice President Alben W. Barkley and Pan American’s President Juan T. Trippe addressed the 2,500 invited guests, who included Mrs. Harry S. ._ , .
