A&S Club Elects PAA Routes Extended in CAB Decision New Officers \E and TWA Also Get Atlantic Routes An 80% turnover in the Board of Directors and the representatives of the Athletic and Social Club resulted from the recent election. Andy Lucas of Stores was elected to the Board of Directors by a write-in vote, the only NBAer to be so distinguished. The newly-elected Directors and representatives will serve a term of one year. The following PAAers were elected Directors as a result of receiving the greatest number of votes in their group: Terry De Salvio Engine Shop Bob Natwick Weights & Balance (Engineering) Prop Shop Metal Shop John Schlueter Bob Leidy Sol Riccobono Ned Peck Andy Lucas Paul Wollam Pat Shaw Eileen Bredehoft C-54 Modification Communications Stores Traffic industrial Relations Atlantic Accounting The following were chosen by the Nominating Committee to represent Atlantic Division personnel for their group: Elliot Held Engine Shop Elmo Licari Beaching Crew (Continued on Page 2) "Clipper Theatre”-New Dramatic Name “The Clipper Theatre” has been announced as the name, which in the future, will identify the Athletic and Social Club’s dramatic group. To encourage new talent and give every member who is interested in acting an opportunity to display his talents, three one-act comedies have been chosen and cast for immediate production. They are to be presented at the Clipper Club on July 30 and every PAAer is invited to attend. There is no admission charge. The cast of these plays is made up of members of the group who heretofore have not appeared in either of the club’s major performances, “Night Must Fall” or “Dangerous Corner.” The actors and actresses who did such magnificent jobs in these two plays have volunteered to act as directors and stage managers. The Clipper Theatre is most interested in recruiting new members. The sole requirement is an interest in the theatre. If you’ve been harboring a yen to be another Bergman or Boyer, call Ray Colcord on Ext. 533 and he will give you all necessary details. tHS034l,Aec\, Ide/-- The Civil Aeronautics Board recently rendered its decision in the North Atlantic Route Case and in it confirmed PAA’s present transatlantic routes and granted an extension of our present route to London. In the same decision, Transcontinental and Western Air Inc., and American Export Airlines Inc. were authorized to operate additional air transportation routes. Pan American’s present certificate to London and Marseilles are permanent certificates. The extended route and the certificates granted TWA and AE are limited to a term of seven years, after which CAB will review the certificates and render a decision according to its findings. Under the present decision Pan American’s existing route to London is extended through Europe and the Near East to Calcutta, India, via Brussels, Prague, Vienna-Istanbul — via either Budapest and Bucharest or Belgrade —, Ankara-Karachi — via Teheran or Beirut and Baghdad. Pan American’s certificate to Lisbon and Marseilles was amended to include Barcelona. American Export temporary certificate to Ireland was reaffirmed and extended to Moscow via Newfoundland, Shannon, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Warsaw. Another route extends from New York via Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, Stavanger, Norway, Stockholm, Helsinki and Leningrad to Moscow. Some schedules will service London from Iceland via Glasgow. TWA was certificated to Bombay by a northern route through Newfoundland, Foynes, Paris, Berne, Rome, Athens, Cairo, Jerusalem, Basra and Bahrein. It was also certificated to operate over a southern route to Newfoundland, Lisbon, Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, Benghazi and Cairo. A route was also granted between the northern and southern routes, from Lisbon to Rome via Madrid. The certificate under which we have operated, allows only two trips a week. The new certificate imposes no limitation. In reaching a decision to permit domestic air THEY HEAD PRIORITIES WASHINGTON — Crop dusting and fighting forest fires are among the commercial flying jobs that will allow applicants for priorities on new light planes to head the list of buyers now being made up by the new Aircraft Division of the War Production Board at Washington. At present this division is accepting requests for such planes on the basis of when production starts. carriers to engage in international air transportation, the Board recognized that such an operation would have some adverse competitive effect upon PAA whose past operations have been limited to border points of entry. In order to minimize to some extent this competitive disadvantage, CAB authorized our company to conduct operations to Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington in addition to New York. TWA and AE also were granted these co-terminals to New York. In rendering its decision the CAB pointed out that there are many uncertainties which cannot be definitely determined at this time and that therefore the service authorized should not be of a fixed and inflexible nature but should be of such character as to permit necessary review and revision. In addition to limiting the new certificates to a period of seven years, the Board specified that the routes in the new certificate are general route areas instead of the usual point-to-point pattern. Thus for example, on its route beyond London to Calcutta, Pan American is authorized to serve in general the countries through which it operates, subject to compliance with the laws of those countries and the regulations issued by the Board. Within the general route areas the Board has prescribed an initial service plan setting forth intermediate and terminal points within the area to which service is contemplated. With the Board’s approval and upon compliance with its regulations, a carrier may initiate changes in this service plan within the area prescribed. In a separate decision the Board approved American Airlines paying $3,000,000 for 120,000 shares of unissued capital stock of American Export Airlines which will result in American’s holding about 51% of American Export stock; American Export Lines (the steamship company) will retain its present holdings in the airline which will amount to approximately 24%. The rest will be held by the general public. WORLD’S BIGGEST GLIDER The biggest motorless transport in the world is the Hamiclar, a product of Great Britain, which, when fully loaded weighs 36,000 pounds. Used by the RAF, this glider is capable of carrying a seven ton tank to the battle front with the assurance it can be in action 15 seconds after the aircraft has come to a stop. It requires a four engine bomber to pull it.
