Pan American World Airways ¿fPPFR ATLANTIC DIVISION Read on four continents and four islands in between Volume 13 JUNE, 1954 No. 6 Nothing’s Better Than “President Special/’ Says Editor Of American Aviation Magazine When someone says that your service is “good,” there’s still a question—how good? But there can be no question about the rating given to Pan American’s President Special by Wawne W. Parrish, editor and publisher of American Aviation Magazine. And he’s tried all the better services. He knows! And he was so enthusiastic, after flying The Special, that he devoted the greater part of his “En Route” column (May 10 issue) to praise for PAA. Following is the part of his column which had to do with yourairline —HAS MERIT The Atlantic Division Clipper has merit. At least that was the opinion of judges in a recent President Special This time we chose Pan-American’s once-weekly President Special nonstop from New York to Paris. Having tried out Air France’s de luxe Golden Parisian and having enjoyed the first class services of SAS’s Royal Viking, TWA, Swissair, and' BOAC, I wanted to see what this de luxe PAA Stratocruiser service was like. “I found out. There isn’t anything better. For this once-weekly Special, PAA charges $25 extra fare per person. Berths are $35 each. But there are two staterooms available in the forward compartment, providing privacy, for $125 each. My wife and I were given the use of one of the staterooms for take-off and through the dinner hour, but other passengers had taken the compartment, for sleeping and we had upper berths in the rear. “As I’ve written before, the air-pianb cannot compete with a steamship for truly de luxe travel, simply because of the physical limitations of the vehicle. But it is amazing how much can be done to provide first class comfort on blue ribbon flights, providing there are enough passengers willing to pay the necessary increased fares. “PAA added the two staterooms with some misgivings, I’m told, (Continued on Page 3) Chicago/Europe Service Upped To 3 Per Week A once-weekly service from Chicago and Detroit, in operation since April 30, is being increased this month to three flights weekly to Europe from the mid-western cities. On Tuesday, June 1, Pan American inaugurated the first direct service to northern Germany and Scandinavia from Chicago and Detroit. And on June 5, Pan American increases its present CHI-SNN-LON service with an additional flight which will terminate in Frankfurt. The new northern Germany and Scandinavia flight departs from Chicago at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays (5 p.m. from Detroit); stops at Prestwick, Hamburg and Copenhagen, and arrives in Stockholm the following day. The added service to London departs from Chicago at 3 p.m. on Sundays, stops at Shannon and arrives in London and Frankfurt the following day. The previous service departs from the mid-western cities each Friday. All schedules are operated with Super-Six Clippers. All are low-fare, Rainbow flights. contest sponsored by the International Council of Industrial Editors. They have awarded a certificate of merit to The Clipper, “in recognition of exceptional accomplishment in achievement of purpose, excellence of editorial content and effectiveness of design.” A complete story concerning the award will be included in the next issue of The Clipper. Pan American To Pay Twenty-Gent Dividend Pan American’s board of directors has declared a dividend of 20 cents per share, payable on June 18 to stockholders of record at the close of business on May 28. This will be the 38th dividend to be paid by Pan American. Dividend payments have been made each year since 1941. First Picnic Is Scheduled For June 26 Eats, drinks, softball and other games will be features of an Atlantic Division picnic to be held at the Beth Page State Park on Saturday, June 26. This is the first affair of this kind (at least in recent years) to be sponsored by the Pan Am Club. But if successful this year, it may become an annual event for AD employees and their friend's and families. The date set for the picnic is still “tentative” as The Clipper goes to press. It dramatically shows who and what make the airline “tick.” It is expected that similar films will be produced four times yearly and that each will have an ultimate audience of about five million people. According to present plans, the film will be shown before meetings of the stockholders, at meetings of the company’s board of directors and at management club meetings.
