Volume 6 March 24, 1948 Number 41 JOHNSON RETURNS TO AFRICA AS SOM Leonard L. Johnson, who moved into the aviation business from a Pittsburgh steel mill and worked his way up from mechanic 2/c to chief mechanic, has been named station operations manager in Leopoldville, it is announced by Frank H. Hankins, Jr., operations manager. Mr. Johnson was born and educated in Pittsburgh and his first job was as a laborer in a steel mill. Next he went to work for Pennsylvania Central Airlines (now Capitol Airlines) as a member of the line crew then, in 1942, he was hired by PAA-Africa, Ltd., and assigned to Accra as mechanic 2/c. The following year he was transferred to Miami as an instructor in the maintenance school and late in 1943 he went to Natal with the Africa-Orient Division. From Natal he went to Casablanca, back to Miami, then to Karachi, where he was chief mechanic and acting station manager. He returned to the US by way of the Pacific. Joining the Atlantic Division in July, 1946, Mr. Johnson was sent to Dakar, then to Johannesburg as chief mechanic. He returned to the US in January and is preparing to leave for his new assignment in the Belgian Congo on March 29. Hermanson, Kendall, Robison, James Complete Decade With Pan American Flight Radio Officers Floyd A. Hermanson and Fred W. Kendall, Assistant Chief Inspector Franklin E. Robison, and Senior Storekeeper Alex E. James are all wearing new stars on their wing-and-world lapel pins. All joined PAA in March, 1938, and are celebrating their tenth anniversaries with the company. Open JJetteA. The Atlantic Division, this Easter season, is opening a new chapter in fast, frequent air service to Bermuda. Today and every day until April 9, four Constellation Clippers — each one carrying a capacity load of 47 passengers — will take off from New York, bound for Kindley Field. In order to meet our unprecedented schedule safely and on time, the smoothest kind of teamwork is essential. In the shops, on the line, in every traffic and operations office, close cooperation is called for, at LaGuardia Field, in Bermuda, and in the air. Day-by-day reports of our success in meeting our stepped-up Bermuda schedules are now being issued. At the end of this record-breaking Easter season we hope that you will see Pan American recognized . . . everywhere . . . beyond dispute ... as THE line blanketing the air lanes between New York and the Bermuda Islands. Only with YOUR help can we achieve this goal. James H. Smith, Jr. Vice President Franklin Robison Floyd Hermanson Mr. Hermanson took up radio as a hobby hack in 1931, then joined the staff of a radio station in West Palm Peach, Fla. He served as radio officer aboard several private yachts that cruised Atlantic waters before joining PAA at Miami in 1938. The following year he transferred to the Atlantic Division. He has made more than 200 Atlantic crossings in over 7,000 hours spent in the air. Mr. Kendall started with PAA as an apprentice radio operator in Miami. Two years later he became a flight radio operator and in 1942 he became supervisor of the flight radio school in Miami. He returned to flight duty the next year and he transferred to the Atlantic Division in June, 1947. (Continued on page 4) PAA SUPPORTS THE REO CROSS... MRS.
