FUNE 14.1945 ATLANTIC DIVISION ¿ÍPPFR Read on four continents and four islands in between Reciprocal Vacation Discounts Available While it is definitely not an innovation, there are many PAAers who are unaware of the Reciprocal Vacation Discounts between certain domestic lines and Pan American, available to airline employes. Personnel of PAA and their immediate families are eligible for a 25% reduction in oneway, round trip, circle trip, or excursion fares on the following domestic lines: Braniff Airways; Chicago and Southern Air Lines; Delta Airlines, Mid Continent Airlines; National Airlines; Transcontinental and Western Air, Inc.; United Air Lines and Western Airlines. The employe’s husband or wife, and children under 18 years of age, are included in the term “immediate family.” Where there is no spouse, a dependent living in the household of the employe may avail himself of the discount. However, for children under 12 years of age, normal half-fare tariff will be charged. Infants under two years of age travel free. Employes who anticipate taking advantage of the vacation discount must secure identification from their department heads. This merely consists of a letter addressed to the desired airline stating: “M------------------- is an employe of Pan American World Airways traveling on vacation and application is hereby made for a 25% vacation fare reduction over your lines covering the following passage: Last week we ran a few “Executive Boners” which were picked up from correspondence here at NBA. Did you enjoy them? Perhaps you’ve come across some which others would enjoy reading. Why not send them in? There’s no malice in printing them — it’s all in fun. Address them to the CLIPPER Editor, or call Ext. 333 and-we’ll jot them down. George Cronin, Building Superintendent, in a droll pose, awaiting with rapt concentration a dive by Tony Zukas, while Cid Canale, the third member of the act, stands by for one of his and Cronin’s comic stunts. George appeared recently on Radio City Music Hall's stage. Lus(54\/Acci, Felder (include here the origin, destination, complete routing and dates of travel). Presentation of this letter is made to the domestic airline when application is made for reservation and tickets. If the trip is to be interline, then separate letters are required for each of the companies involved. In turnabout, employes of the aforementioned domestic lines enjoy the same discount privilege when vacation travelling on a Clipper. A letter, identifying the vacationer as being affiliated with his company, should be presented to the Pan American ticketing office and the discount will he effected. Employes are urged to hear in mind the fact that airlines are still operating under a wartime-program and space is difficult — especially for extensive vacation travel; priority ratings are still in effect. Therefore, we should comply with ODT’s request to keep non-essential travel to a minimum. Clipper Reunites Pair Separated 17 Years A recent, example of inter-department cooperation paid off in a bridegroom-to-be joining his fiancee after a 17-year wait, a pair of post-war Clipper passengers, and several newspaper clippings for the happy couple’s scrapbook. The story started late one night when Ray L. Ruhlman of Youngstown, Ohio, telephoned Panres to say his fiancee, Dorothy Nicholls, and her mother were arriving by Clipper from Britain and that be wanted to meet them at the airport. Tom Mooney, Reservations Supervisor, who took the call, learned which trip the Nicholls’ were on, then bad Pat Riley of Panres notify Ruhlman. Tom also tipped off Passenger Service and Public Relations on the imminent reunion. Ruhlman, who hadn’t seen Miss Nicholls since they first met 17 years ago when she was visiting in Youngstown, flew to New York and waited impatiently in the Marine Terminal for his bride-to-be to clear Customs. Passenger Service representatives made bis waiting period as enjoyable as possible -under the circumstances. When Miss Nicholls emerged from Customs, she and Ruhlman, smilingly told newspapermen the story of their romance and their plans for an immediate marriage. They then posed for pictures with Miss Nicholls’ 72-year-old mother. The following day there were stories in New York and Ohio newspapers to help the pair remember their reunion. A few days later Tom Mooney received a letter of thanks to all from Ruhlman and an assurance that he and bis bride would “call upon PAA to solve transportation problems” connected with their trip to England after the war. New Airport Method Speeds Transit Time Coordination and cooperation between the airport office at NBA and Shediac is responsible for the record transit times which are being set at the first stop on the North Atlantic route. George Long, Airport Manager at North Beach, in explaining the new procedure, stated that the Airport Office prepares the entire flight plan from NBA to Botwood on one form so that it’s unnecessary for Shediac to do any paper work covered by that one form. Normally a flight time analysis and flight plan is worked out here at NBA to the next point and thereon point to point. Under the new method, the ship is cleared from NBA to Botwood directly so that no flight plan or flight clearance is necessary at Shediac. Another angle developed by George is the procedure of advising Shediac by radio of the fuel required on departure so that the extra task of ordering gasoline may be completed before arrival. The merit of completing Airport Office paper work at North Beach is obvious when we compare the average transit time of the 1944. season the transit time was 1% hours. Under the improved system this time has been cut to 45 minutes, the fastest in the division. This average is particularly commendable in light of the congestion Shediac often experiences with as many as five ships in the water. In some cases this average has been exceeded, as in the case of trip 3311 which transited Shediac in thirty-eight minutes. BUY A WAR BOND DO IT TODAY Air Medal to Kraus AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE BOMBER STATION, England . . . The Air Medal has recently been awarded to Sergeant Robert E. Kraus, 21, City Island, New York, for “meritorious achievement” while participating on heavy bombing attacks against the Reich. Sgt. Kraus is the gunnery instructor and observer at an Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress unit. He is a member of the 385th Bombardment Group commanded by Colonel George Y. Jumper of Natoma, California. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Kraus, 161 Belden Street, City Island, New York, be graduated from Christopher Columbus High School. Prior to bis entry into the Army Air Forces in October, 1942, he was a crash boat crewman for the Pan American Airways, La Guardia Field, New York. Before arriving overseas, he was a gunnery instructor at Central Instructors School, Fort Myers, Fla. Sgt. Kraus received his aerial gunnery wings at Las Vegas, Nevada, in December, 1943. A
