FÆÆtamcÆ UPPER Copyright 1945 by Pan American Airways, Inc. VOL. 1—NO. 12 NEW YORK JUNE, 1945 Pres. Trippe Receives Fordham Award President Juan Trippe was one of four prominent United States citizens who were honored at a special convocation at Ford-ham University on the evening of May 22nd when they received diplomas from the Institute of Brazilian Studies and the Faculty of Chemical Engineering in Sao Paulo for their generous interest in South American affairs. The others were George F. Brett, Jr., president of the MacMillan Company, Henry Ford II and Thomas J. Watson, president, International Business Machines. The Institute of Brazilian Studies was formed by one of Brazil’s outstanding citizens, Roberto Saboia de Medeiros, S. J. to foster better knowledge of Brazilian administration and social legislation, tropical sicknesses and Brazilian anthropology by United States citizens in addition to courses in the Portuguese language, Brazilian geography and geopolitics, history and cultural antecedents. These courses will not start until after the war when it will be possible for U. S. students to go to Brazil. BOUGHT A BOND TODAY? With the 7th War Loan Drive nearing the half-way mark, Bond Chairman John Termeer announced that N.Y.O. employes as of May 25th have purchased bonds in the amount of $29,875. The 43rd Floor, under the able salesmanship of Bill Dunker, at this writing leads all other floors in percentage of participation and actual dollar sales—77% of the staff having bought a total so far of $5,600. While the total sales to date are far from the $102,500. quota set, the spirit of cooperation extended by everyone has convinced your Bond Committee that the N.Y.O. will reach this quota. Let’s shorten that trip to Tokio and return! Buy as MANY bonds as you can—as often as you can—but BUY ’em! Although N. Y. C. gave way to wildest excitement on V-E Day, with reams of streamers and confetti streaming from office windows in a veritable May snowstorm, N. Y. O. PAA-ites stayed on the job, thus continuing to do their part in Pan American’s valuable contribution toward attainment of total victory. GLADYS FORBES That PAA Pulchritude! Once again justifying PAA’s enviable reputation for employing feminine pulchritude in all offices, Gladys Forbes, executive-secretary on V. P. Gledhill’s staff was the unanimous choice of three judges the other evening when she appeared in a beauty contest on Lever Bros.’ audience—participation television show, “I Challenge You” over Station WABD. Taken completely by surprise when the judges’ decision was announced, Gladys modestly and graciously acknowledged the hearty applause of the studio audience which was in complete accord with the decision of those on the show. As winner of the beauty contest for that particular week, Gladys will appear in the final contest at a later date. The prize ? A contract with Harry Conover, the famous models’ agent. Mary Jane Bastis, also on V. P. Gledhill’s staff, appeared on the show too, when she was chosen from the studio audience by m.c. Eddie Dunn to participate in the acting of the commercial. She, too, looked very pretty and took her part with complete poise. Safety Awards for Panagra, PAA Affiliates Panagra, Lloyd Aereo Boliviano and four PAA affiliates — AVIANCA, AVENSA, CUBANA and UMCA—were among 21 airlines which received certificates when the Inter-American Safety Council made its Annual Aviation Safety Awards on May 23rd. The ceremony which took place at the Metropolitan Club was highlighted by the appearance of Morris Mumper, Director of Aviation, Inter-American Affairs, Dept, of State, who said a few extemporaneous words of praise and high commendation in congratulating the airlines for their excellent performance in 1944. Panagra Vice President Douglas Campbell accepted the award on behalf of his company’s meritorious service, and the Consuls General represented the countries in which the other airlines operate. Many representatives from PAA and Panagra attended the luncheon. STAMPS FOR THE WOUNDED A volunteer committee of the nation’s philatelists is helping to take the minds of hospitalized servicemen from white ceilings and black futures by introducing them to the hobby of collecting postage stamps under the supervision of the American Red Cross. Over 10,000 men in nearly sixty Army and Navy hospitals and convalescent centres already have begun this absorbingly interesting hobby so that the demand for stamps to distribute now is critically desperate. Pan American World Airways has promised to support this undertaking, so if you get any foreign or unusual United States issues (the committee does not need ordinary 1, V/2, 2 or 3-cent, or the 6 and 8-cent air-mail stamps) please put them in an envelope addressed to C. W. Birely, Office Manager, 43rd Floor, and drop them in the house mail. We don’t need to peer into the crystal ball to be able to tell who the winner of the entire contest will be. We’re sure that PAA’s representative of feminine pulchritude, Gladys Forbes, will be way ahead. Remember, the stamps you throw away are the ones that will give some hospitalized lad hours of pleasure and will aid him on the road to mental recovery and physical recuperation.
