All Digital Initiatives A-Z

Below are links to collaborative projects developed between the University of Miami Libraries and others -- faculty, students and other organizations. The University of Miami Libraries endeavor to develop and implement strategies, resources, and processes that enable the exploration of technology to enhance the teaching and learning environment. In keeping with this vision, the Libraries work organizationally and collaboratively with faculty and students and other academic institutions to create digital projects that support scholarship.

Alberto del Pozo's Orishas

The Oricha Collection by Alberto del Pozo pays homage to the primary gods and goddesses that comprise the Afro-Cuban religion of Santería. Each pen, crayon, and ink illustration measures 40 by 30 inches. The Oricha Collection is held in the University of Miami Libraries Cuban Heritage Collection.

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

A bi-annual, peer-reviewed journal of original works by Caribbean writers and scholars worldwide exclusively in electronic form. The journal is a non-profit project of Caribbean Literary Studies in the Department of English at the University of Miami.

Alberto Arredondo Papers

The Alberto Arredondo Papers consist of reports and papers regarding Cuba's economy.

ARTstor

Provides UM faculty & students access to thousands of art and other images from a variety of contributors, including ARTstor, Saskia LTD, UM faculty & library collections and the Lowe museum.

Bibliography on Moderate Cuban Politics

An annotated bibliography of 271 primary and secondary resources related to events, groups and individuals that advocated Cuba return to democratic process during the period 1952-1965. Prepared by Holly Ackerman.

Bob Simms: An Activist’s Life and Legacy

This exhibit offers a snapshot of the life and legacy of Robert H. Simms and an overview of some of the research resources available in his collection. The online exhibit contains photographs, maps, a timeline, a bibliography and information on the collection held in Special Collections, Otto G. Richter Library.

Luis J. Botifoll Oral History Project

The Luis J. Botifoll Oral History Project digital collection inlcudes transcriptions and video clips of oral history interviews conducted with members of the first generation of Cubans exiled since the Cuban Revolution.

Bound to Please: Fine Leather Bindings

A selection of 70 volumes from the extensive rare book holdings of the Special Collections Division. The exhibition describes and illustrates a diverse and exquisite group of leather bindings dating from the fifteenth through the early twentieth century and include books from the United States, Cuba, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands.

Mark F. Boyd Collection

The Collection contains materials relating to Florida and United Staties history as well as to natural history and medicine.

Manuel R. Bustamante Photograph Collection

Over 500 photographs of buildings, animals, dwellings, churches, landscapes and other views from all parts of Cuba primarily dating from the turn of the 20th Century.

Lydia Cabrera Papers

Lydia Cabrera was one of the 20th century's leading writers on Cuban folklore and an internationally known chronicler of Afro-Cuban culture and religion. Her papers include correspondence, manuscripts, photographs and other materials documenting her life and works.

Caribbean Art and Visual Culture

As Far as the Eye/I Can See: Caribbean Art and Visual Culture is the product of a 2008 Digital Library Fellowship awarded to Dr. Patricia Saunders, Assistant Professor in the Department of English. This visual arts web site features contemporary Caribbean artists sharing their visions, voices and vantage points. Critics offer perspectives on current exhibits as well as critical debate on contemporary visual art and culture. The Digital Library Fellowship Program is funded by Richter Library and supports faculty partnerships in developing new digital resources that advance research, teaching, and learning.

Caribbean Literary Studies

A multi-media web site developed for Caribbean Literary Studies in the Department of English at the University of Miami. The site contains a searchable video archive of talks given at the 1991-1996 Caribbean Writer's Summer Institute; organizational information; conference and special event information; and, a scholarly journal.

Caribbean Writer's Summer Institute Archival Video Collection

Caribbean Writer's Summer Institute Archival Video Collection provides a searchable video archive of talks given at the 1991-1996 Caribbean Writer's Summer Institute sponosored by Caribbean Literary Studies, Department of English at the University of Miamia. Participants include Edwidge Danticut, George Lamming, Kamau Brathwaite, Sandra Paquet and others.

The Civil Rights Movement and the Black Experience in Miami

The Civil Rights Movement and the Black Experience in Miami is the online companion of the Special Collections exhibit located on the 2nd floor of the Otto G. Richter Library, University of Miami (February 18 - May 1, 2009). The selected images tell a story of struggle, community challenges, and hope for Black Miami in the 20th century. Through a combination of personal papers, books, professional photography, fliers and reports of civil rights activities this exhibition on Black Miami presents a sobering glimpse at what was and illustrates a path of civic involvement and pride.

Coral Gables Garden Club Scrapbooks

Organized in 1925, the Coral Gables Garden Club has promoted gardening and community beautification in Coral Gables for over 80 years. The Coral Gables Garden Club Scrapbooks provide information on Club activities from 1925 through 1944.

Cordovés and Bolaños Families Collection

The Cordovés and Bolaños Families Collection contains letters, documents, and photographs from Cuba's Wars of Independence and the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

Cuba: Capitanía General Collection

The Cuba: Capitanía General Collection consists of "bandos" (edicts), royal decrees, and official forms from 1896-1898 published during the governments of Valeriano Weyler and Ramón Blanco, Captain Generals of the Island of Cuba.

Cuban Historical & Literary Manuscript Collection

The Cuban Historical and Literary Manuscript Collection is comprised of original manuscripts from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Acquired as individual pieces or in small groups, this collection includes manuscript books, slavery sales and property documents, wills, and correspondence.

Cuban Photograph Collections

The Cuban Photograph Collections present over 5,000 photographs that have been cataloged, digitized and made searchable thanks to a grant from the Florida State Division of Cultural Affairs. A wide range of topics about Cuba and the Cuban Diaspora are covered.

The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus

Explore the experiences of tens of thousands of citizens who have left Cuba in small boats, Home made rafts and other unusual craft. The site focuses on those who precipitated and participated in one specific sea exodus – the raft crisis of 1994. Through photos, videos, bibliography, primary documents, and narratives the site examines the 1994 crisis and, by extension, begins to investigate the nature of the larger theme of post-1980 Cuban migration.

Cuban Theater Digital Archive

A bilingual cultural heritage site developed by Dr. Lillian Manzor that provides inter-related information on writers, directors, texts, productions, festival, venues and theater companies. Also included are digitized photographs, theater programs, and other resources, including video excerpts of theater productions. This site was developed by Dr. Lillian Manzor, Modern Languages & Literature.

Charles Deering Collection

The Charles Deering Collection at the University of Miami Libraries consists of albums and photographs from Florida, Spain and Portugal, including images of his homes and family members.

Democracy in Miami: A Work in Progress

Local experts, activists and officials participate in a series of video-taped panels discussing the state of democracy in contemporary Miami and ways that the quality of life can be improved for area residents. The project was developed and hosted by Professor Gregory Bush, History Department.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Papers

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Papers (1890-1998) at the University of Miami Libraries document the literary work and social activism of the "Lady of the Everglades". The collection includes manuscripts, essays, correspondence, photographs, maps and audio visual materials about Florida's history and development.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Writer & Conservationist

This digital exhibit highlights the literary accomplishments and social activism of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a unique personality in Florida history. The materials include a timeline, bibliography, photographs, maps and information that document Ms. Douglas' life, conservationist involvement and her profound regional interest in Florida.

The Gareth and Janet Dunleavy Collection of Irish History and Literature

The Gareth and Janet Dunleavy Collection of Irish History and Literature includes an array of printed works dating from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries, accumulated by Gareth and Janet in the course of their scholarly research. The Dunleavys donated materials in memory of the late Bernard Benstock.

Amos Beebe Eaton: A Soldier's Journal of the Second Seminole Indian Wars

The Amos Beebe Eaton Papers include a journal kept by Eaton while serving as a soldier in the Second Seminole Indian Wars during 1837 and 1838. This handwritten journal chronicles an extraordinary year in the life of a young lieutenant and provides detailed insight into life in South Florida over 160 years ago.

Emancipation: A Caribbean Story

The people of the Caribbean islands, survivors of brutal slave regimes had to carve out new economic, political, and personal identities for themselves. Dr. Edward Baptist, professor of history at the University of Miami, and another section of his History 300/Caribbean Studies class collaborated with the Special Collections faculty and staff, to create this educational web site. Students used for their research many rare Caribbean materials from Special Collections. These historical materials are used to vividly describe and illustrate this period of great change in the Caribbean.

Tomás Estrada Palma Collection

This collection contains materials related to Tomás Estrada Palma (1835- 1908), first president of the Cuban Republic from 1902 to 1906. Items include correspondence, clippings, and photographs. Other materials pertain to members of the Estrada Palma family, in particular Tomás Andrés Estrada Palma II (1884 1960) and his son Tomás Douglas Estrada Palma III (1911-1999).

Fernando Fernández-Cavada Collection

The Fernando Fernández-Cavada Collection consists primarily of the correspondence of Federico, Adolfo, and Emilio Fernández Cavada during Cuba's Ten Years War (1868-1878), as well as some materials of Emilio Fernández-Cavada Suárez del Villar, Lieutenant Colonel in Cuba's War of Independence (1895-1898).

Florida Photograph Album Collection

Florida's natural wonders, landscapes and historic landmarks provided much visual interest for travelers and settlers at the turn of the twentieth century. The Florida Photograph Album Collection contains photographs of scenic Florida from St. Augustine to Key West, dated primarily from the late 1800s to the 1920s.

A selection of 139 promotional booklets and flyers covering places and activities in South Florida from The Florida Promotional Materials Collection.

FSA Photographs in Florida

This web site provides a guide and curriculum activities for teachers and students interested in using the photographs taken by the Farm Security Administration (an American "New Deal" Federal government agency). It is based, in part, on a curriculum guide developed for the Southeast Museum of Photography and the exhibition Farm Security Administration Photographs of Florida, which was based on the book by Michael Carlebach and Eugene F. Provenzo, Jr.. Farm Security Photographs of Florida (Gainseville: University Press of Florida, 1993).

The Jackie Gleason Collection

The Jackie Gleason Collection includes books, journals, periodicals, and publications accumulated by this world famous entertainer. Gleason, a comedian, television star, and motion picture actor of international acclaim, developed a deep and abiding interest in parapsychology and its many components.

Polita Grau de Agüero Papers

The Polita Grau de Agüero Papers contains speeches, writings, and photographs that document Polita Grau's 14 years as a political prisoner in Cuba and her activities in exile on behalf of political prisoners and Operation “Pedro Pan.“

Imagebase

The Imagebase Collection supports teaching across a variety of disciplines at the University of Miami. The images in the collection support the study of both Architecture and Art and Art History. The images were selected in consultation with faculty and slide curators. The goal of the collection is to support the teaching and studying of Architecture and Art and Art History, with an emphasis on images that faculty use on their teaching and research. Some specialized collections in the slide rooms of both schools are also part of the Imagebase collection.

José Lezama Lima Papers

José Lezama Lima is known as a poet, essayist, and novelist whose work greatly influenced other Cuban writers. This collection contains letters written by Lezama Lima to his sister Eloísa Lezama Lima from 1961 to 1976.

Enrique Labrador Ruiz Papers

The Enrique Labrador Ruiz Papers consists of the manuscripts, correspondence, and clippings of Enrique Labrador Ruiz (1902-1991), Cuban journalist and poet.

Lillian Frow Peacock & Eunice Peacock Merrick Collection

Photographs showing the Frows, Peacocks, and other families at recognizable landmarks in historic Coconut Grove. Extended family and neighbors are portrayed in images dating from the 1860s through the early 1900s.

Lyceum and Lawn Tennis Club Collection

The Lyceum and Lawn Tennis Club was a women's organization in Cuba dedicated to the promotion of cultural understanding, women's issues, social welfare, and women's athletics. The Collection includes photographs, yearbooks, and newsletters generously donated by former members of the Club.

Gerardo Machado y Morales Papers

Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) was the youngest general in the Cuban War of Independence and the fifth president of Cuba (1925-1933). The Collection contains correspondence, financial records, documents, and photographs of Machado and his family in their years of exile from Cuba.

Augustus C. Mayhew, Jr. Photograph Collection

The collection consists of black and white photographs of the Mayhew and McAbee families during their time living in the American colony of La Gloria in the province of Camagüey, Cuba.

Memory and Record

Memory and Record previews Cuban and Cuban exile resources in the Cuban Heritage Collection. Categories include The Colonial Era, U.S. Occupation, The Republic, Revolutionary Cuba, Cuban Exiles, Postcards, and Havana 1900.

The D. Ralph Millard, M.D. Collection

The site features portraits of the leaders in plastic surgery spanning the past three centuries, together with their books and Dr. Millard's many publications, awards, and commendations, that was digitized at the D. Ralph Millard, M.D. Plastic Surgery Photo Archive for the benefit of plastic surgeons throughout the world.

Model Land Company

Henry Flagler founded and became president of the Florida East Coast Railroad (FECR) after becoming inspired by Florida's potential for prosperous expansion while on a winter vacation trip to the tropical state. Flagler then created the Model Land Company (MLC) in 1896 to manage his rapidly increasing real estate holdings in Florida.

Helen Muir Papers

The Helen Muir Papers consist of Mrs. Muir's personal as well as professional correspondence including letters to poet Robert Frost and his daughter, Leslie, Janet Reno, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

Munroe Family Papers

The Munroe Family Papers consists of a diverse grouping of letters, diaries, household accounts, journals, and photographs' chronicling the activities of one of South Florida's pioneering families.

Old Florida Maps

Old Florida Maps tells the story, using digital reproductions of maps from monographs and private collections held locally in South Florida, of how Florida came to be represented in the current geographic form familiar to us all. The author of this scholarly endeavor is Dr. Joseph Fitzgerald, founder and chairman of the Miami International Map Fair at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida.

Pan American World Airways, Inc. Records

The Pan American Records include administrative and financial files; technical, mechanical and research reports; extensive public relations and promotional materials; internal publications including newsletters, journals and press releases; and other materials. Extensive photograph files, albums, and scrapbooks also document the world-wide history of Pan Am as a pioneer in the development of aviation equipment, air routes, commercial passenger service, navigation techniques and communication systems.

The Helen Carmichael Purdy Foundation Collection

The Helen Carmichael Purdy Foundation Collection contains an outstanding collection of rare and unique research materials on Florida and its vast history. The items presented here in the Purdy Foundation worldwide web exhibition cover a wide span of time, and encompass most of the classic formats of archival material. Books, maps, letters, and other documents spanning the 16th to the 20th century tell the fascinating story of the discovery, settlement and growth of the great state of Florida.

The Rare Map Collections

Although the map collections in the Special Collections include maps and charts that cover nearly all areas of the world, their major emphasis is on Florida, the United States, and the Caribbean Area. The collections are comprised of works by famous cartographers, covers a variety of subjects, and includes items dated from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries.

Reclaiming the Everglades

Examine documents on the establishment of the Everglades National Park; the growth of the modern conservation movement; the treatment of Native American Indians and related materials from the University of Miami Libraries, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and Florida International University.

Richard B. Hoit Photograph Collection

Photographer Richard Hoit came to Miami in 1914 when he was 27. Already an experienced movie and aerial photographer, his collection of photographs includes scenes from regions as far apart as Vermont, Florida, and South America.

The Calvin Shedd Papers

Letters written by Calvin Shedd, a carpenter from New Hampshire, who enlisted in the Seventh Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers and served the Union Army during the Civil War from 1862 - 1863.

The Bob Simms Collection

The Bob Simms Collection documents the life and activities of Robert H. Simms in the black communities of Coconut Grove and Miami.

The Sixties

The Sixties site was developed to support an interdepartmental (History, English, American Studies) course taught by Professors Bowen and Spivey. It features oral history presentations by UM faculty, a sixties chronology, and a selected bibliography of books held in the University of Miami Libraries.

Slave Resistance: A Caribbean Story

A fascinating and scholarly account of the trials and lifestyles of Caribbean slaves. Dr. Edward Baptist, professor of history at the University of Miami, and his History 300/Caribbean Studies class collaborated with the Special Collections faculty and staff, to create this unique and educational web site. Many rare Caribbean maps from Special Collections, plus illustrations and engravings in rare books, were chosen as visual accompaniments to essays written by students on this infamous historical period.

Souvenirs of Miami, Florida: 100 Years of Promotional Literature

The Special Collections Division of the University of Miami Libraries has joined the celebration of the City of Miami's Centennial with a presentation of promotional literature selected from the Florida Collection. Promotional literature offers an important and colorful avenue to explore the historical development of Miami and its environs.

The Alvan Stewart Papers

The Alvan Stewart Papers contains a diary written by the New York lawyer and abolitionist Alvan Stewart (1780-1849). The diary chronicles Stewart's travels in 1831, including a sea voyage from New York to Liverpool, his travels through England and France, and the return voyage.

Earl W. Sutherland, Jr. Research Notebooks

Earl W. Sutherland, Jr., M.D. (1915-1974) was a pioneering American pharmacologist and physiologist who isolated cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP) in 1956. The site features 59 research notebooks which keep track of the details of his Nobel prize winning research between 1946 and 1971, biographical and bibliographical information, and Dr. Sutherland's Nobel prize lecture.

Aaron Thomas: The Caribbean Journal of a Royal Navy Seaman, 1798-1799

The Caribbean Journal of Aaron Thomas, dating from June 15, 1789 through October 26, 1799, chronicles the daily life of a crew member of HMS Lapwing, a Royal Navy frigate cruising the waters of the Lesser Antilles. The handwritten journal includes accounts of battles with enemy ships, including a report detailing the events surrounding the taking of Surinam by the British during the month of August, 1799.

Travel, Tourism and Urban Growth in Greater Miami

This archive contains selected images from eight collections in the University of Miami Libraries Special Collections Division and narrative that examine the variety of elements that have shaped travel, tourism, and urban growth in Greater Miami. It was developed by Dr. Robin Bachin, Charlton W. Tebeau Associate Professor in the University of Miami History Department, in collaboration with the University of Miami Libraries.

Treasures of Florida Libraries

The Treasures of Florida Libraries offers a wide ranging and diverse look at books, manuscripts and artifacts from Florida’s leading libraries. The materials show the depth and strength of institutional and private holdings. Florida libraries collect in expected and unexpected areas. Floridiana is represented in many collections with Caribbean and oceanographic materials also present. Many libraries have landmark books in the history of the book or classics in the history of English and American literature.

Treasures of the Americas

This online version of the Treasures of the Americas exhibit, which has been on display in the Richter Library since June of 2008, presents a selection of rare and unique materials documenting North and South America and the Caribbean. The items highlighted include rare books, maps, correspondence, diaries and journals, architectural drawings, photographs, paintings and sculpture from the University of Miami Libraries' Special Collections.

The Truth About Cuba Committee, Inc. Records

This collection contains the official records of The Truth About Cuba Committee, Inc. (TACC), a non-profit organization established by Cuban exiles in Miami in 1961 for the purpose of disseminating information about communist Cuba and its role in promoting communism throughout Latin America.

UM Faculty Publications Database

A representative selection of journal articles, books and book chapters published by University of Miami faculty during the years 1994-2002. If they can be identified as such, letters, editorials, replies, abstracts, book reviews, and unpublished works were excluded from the database.

University of Miami Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The UM ETD site provides a publicly available, searchable, full text repository of UM theses and dissertations in PDF format. We are currently under development so the present site contains selected documents from participating University of Miami graduate students.

University of Miami Historical Photographs Collection - Buildings

Buildings and Grounds. Over 2,000 exterior and interior photographs of buildings, including aerial views of the campuses and architectural drawings, dating from the university's inception in the 1920's to the 1980's.

University of Miami Historical Photographs Collection - Colleges

Colleges, Institutions, and Schools. Over 1000 images of university colleges and schools, dating from the 1920's to the 1990's.

University of Miami Historical Photographs Collection - Events

Events. Approximately 2000 images of university-wide events, such as homecoming and commencement, from the 1920's to the 1990's.

University of Miami Historical Photographs Collections - Student Organizations

Student Activities and Organizations. Over 800 photographs of campus cultural groups, religious groups, and social groups, from the 1920's to the 1980's.

University of Miami Legacy

These photographs and streaming videos document the history of the University from the mid-1920s through 2000. Included are oral history interviews with former President Henry King Stanford, F.G. Walton Smith (discussing the founding of the School of Marine Science), and Harold Long, a founder of the United Black Students. They are selected from the University of Miami Libraries Special Collections Division.

Voices of Andrew

This web site provides an online archive of approximately seventy oral history interviews with people who not only lived through Hurricane Andrew, but also experienced the subsequent recovery process in the first months after the storm. The interviews were conducted by undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Miami under the supervision of Professor Eugene F. Provenzo, Jr. Department of Teaching and Learning, School of Education, University of Miami. The web site includes not only the full text of interviews, as well as selected digital audio files.

The Jesse S. Wooley Florida Photographs

Late in January of 1896, Jesse Sumner Wooley, a well-known photographer from Ballston Spa, New York, took passage to Florida on the S.S. Algonquin. Equipped with a hand-held Eastman Kodak Bulls-Eye camera, Wooley used his trip to St. Augustine to create a stereopticon or lantern-slide lecture about Florida. Wooley subsequently returned to Florida in the 1920s and 1930s. The photographs and text which make up this web site are the result of both his trips in 1896 and three decades later.
