HISTORY OF THE CHRIST OF THE ANDES At the very crest of the Uspallata Pass, in the heart of the mighty Andes, a great lonely Figure keeps its solitary vigil over two sister nations. This is the famous Christ of the Andes. It is interesting to know a little of its history. At the beginning of the present century, Chile and Argentine were on the verge of a serious rupture due to frontier disputes which the Governments were unable to settle through the usual channels. Happily a satisfactory arrangement was made in May 1902. The idea was then conceived of commemorating this peace by means of an eloquent symbol. Monseñor Marcelino Be-navente, Bishop of Cuyo, suggested that an enormous statue of Christ the Redeemer be erected at an appropriate spot in the heart of the Andes between Chile and Argentine. The suggestion received the approval of both nations and this now famous work of the Argentine artist, Mateo Alonso, was solemnly unveiled in January 1904. It is located at the crest of the Uspallata Pass, at 12,000 feet above sea level on the very border between the two countries and stand as an international and eternal symbol of peace and good will between these two nations. By one of those happy coincidences, the serene Christ of the Andean heights, symbol of brotherhood between nations, stands but a few meters from and seems also to protect with His uplifted hand the Meteorological Observatory whose trained staff guard with painstaking care the safe passage of the great transport planes, keeping a daily vigil on the changes in weather in order that the peaceful and fruitful communication between the peoples of both countries be easy, comfortable and without perils. newer - to- be - forgotten flight AGROS CONTI N [A A RAN AGRA CO Uj
